Principal Message
Welcome Cooper families and friends!
We had a fantastic start to the school year! Students were excited to see and meet their new teachers and classmates. I heard lots of chatter about summer, new hobbies, new interests and new friends! Please join us at our first PTO event: Playground Mixer on Wednesday, September 21 from 5:00-7:00pm. This is a GREAT way to meet new people! Please see the flyer below.
Each year we choose a learning theme and motto as part of our school culture committee. We decided on a jungle themes and motto: "Wild About Learning"!
The learning theme is often the impetus for school assemblies, family events, classroom field trips etcetera. Our Cooper Way team is planning fun activities to unite our students and families!
Each trimester we will have a school assembly to bring the students together and focus on a character trait such as kindness, honesty, responsibility, respect and growth mindset!
Each month we will celebrate student achievement and positive behaviors
Each week students can participate in our Spirit Days-
WORDY WEDNESDAYS- wear apparel with words that express a positive message
FRIENDSHIP FRIDAYS- wear Cooper and BASD apparel to encourage unity
I look forward to meeting all of you over the next month. Thank you in advance for all your hard work and for supporting your child in their educational experience.
Regards,
Jackey Syens
Principal
Encouraging School Attendance in Elementary School
Attending school regularly helps students feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in 4K and 5K so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important.
Chronic absenteeism in kindergarten is associated with lower achievement in reading, math and general knowledge at the end of first grade. On average, test scores for children missing 18 or more days during the school year were 5% lower than the test scores of children who missed 6 or fewer days during the school year.
The attendance video below is available in the following languages: English and Spanish.
How to Encourage School Attendance in Elementary School?
Parents have a huge influence on students when it comes to attendance. Attending school regularly helps students feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Good attendance will help students do well in high school, work and post high school opportunities.
Before School Starts:
Establish regular bed time and morning routines to help your child develop a habit of on-time attendance.
Find out what day school starts and make sure your child has the required shots.
Introduce your child to her teachers and classmates before school starts to help him transition by attending your school’s open house.
If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make her feel comfortable and excited about learning.
Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
Establish childcare arrangements.
During the school year:
Maintain regular bed time and morning routines to help your child develop a habit of on-time attendance.
Talk to your child about why going to school everyday is important unless they are sick.
If your child seems reluctant to go to school, find out why and talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make him feel comfortable and excited about learning. Keep in mind complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.
When possible, avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
Reach out to your child’s teacher or school counselor if you are experiencing tough times such as unstable housing, transportation or health problems.

Establishing Good Homework Routines and Habits
It’s the beginning of the school year and never too late to establish good homework routines with your kids. Discuss and decide with your child where their backpack is kept, where their blue Communication Folder is placed for parental accessibility, and where homework is done. Don’t forget to establish new (earlier) bed times too. Kids are really working their brains and bodies all day so they need a lot of sleep to replenish their energy.
Fall Assessments
This data will then assist not only the teacher but also each student in creating their GOALS for this first trimester. Each student will conference with their teacher to write academic goals. Goal setting is so important in all that we do! You will hear more about GOAL SETTING in months to come.
Please check out the IREADY FAMILY CENTER for great ways YOU can support your child!
Student Cell Phones At School
If you need to contact your child during the school day, please call the MAIN OFFICE. A message will be relayed to the teacher and then to your student.
Thank you for understanding.
Breakfast and Lunch Procedures
We also offer a wonderful hot lunch for students. This service is provided by Aramark. Students who wish to take hot lunch, are welcome. There are four (4) entrees to choose each day; usually two hot choices and two cold choices along with a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables.
Lunch
- Elementary: $2.45
Most grades will eat breakfast in their classroom prior to the academic school day beginning. This will provide all students the time and energy to begin the day with a nutritious breakfast. Lunches will be served in the cafeteria for all.
You may choose to review the School Lunch Menu with your child on a weekly basis. Your child may also bring a cold lunch on any given day. Please see the menu for breakfast and lunch.
P.T.O. News
Come to the COOPER PTO Playground MIXER!!!
- Wednesday, September 21st to meet new Cooper families, play on the playground, and have some FUN!!

Morning Student Drop Off Procedures
Our school doors open at 7:50am. To ensure safety, please don't drop off before this time. Thank you! Please remember that there are many people moving about so drive slowly and cautiously. If you are driving your child to school, the drop-off area is at the MAIN ENTRANCE on Kendall Street. It is helpful if you have your child sitting in the backseat on the right side. Their door will then open to the sidewalk. Please pull up slowly to the Drop Off Area by the MAIN ENTRANCE along the sidewalk. There will be staff to assist.
IMPORTANT
- "Drop and Go"- No Parking in the one-way drive. We need to keep the traffic flowing quickly.
- If your student needs assistance to buckle/unbuckle, please park in the marked parking slots and cross at the marked crosswalk
- If you need to come into the building, please park in a designated spot.
- If your child is arriving LATER THAN 8:20am- the main doors will be secured. An adult will need to escort the student to the office .
BUS RIDERS
Students who ride the bus will be dropped off on Amanda Street. Students in grades 1-5 will go to our playground to wait until the bell rings at 8:00. Our 4K and 5K students will go to the cafeteria to eat breakfast and wait for their teacher.
STUDENT DISMISSAL PROCEDURES
There are three ways your child can be dismissed at the end of the day. Please read each though and decide what works best for you. Your child's teacher will ask for this information. It is helpful for you to be consistent each day so your child feels safe and can expect what to do at the end of the day.
1. Drive Up Student Pick Up-
- students are dismissed at 3:12pm
- students wait at the Main Entrance by the drop off/pick up lane
- Wait single file in your car; this actually moves quickly once all students are ready
2. Student Walkers
- students are dismissed at 3:12pm
- Students who walk will exit the Kendall Street lower doors.
- A Crossing Guard will be at the corner of Amanda and Kendall Street to cross students. Staff will be on the sidewalk for safety
