Gunter Elementary School - Groundbreaking
Gunter ISD broke ground on our new elementary school on Saturday, April 22nd in a groundbreaking ceremony. Superintendent, Mr. Scott Martindale, started the morning with introductions and thanked each group including those who researched, imagined, planned, and everyone else who helped make this a reality. Board President, Mrs. Shelli Hales, gave a special thank you to Mr. Don Godwin, who we purchased the land from. Mr. Godwin has been a huge supporter of our Gunter students and faculty, and was invited to join in on the "first dig".
We had a great crowd at the celebration including several students who will be attending the new school when it opens. An impromptu student groundbreaking happened after the ceremonial groundbreaking, and it's too cute not to share!

GIFT Foundation Reception - April 3, 2023
It was a special evening for many GHS soon to be graduates!
Eighteen students were awarded scholarship money to help them follow their dreams. Each student was introduced and we heard some spectacular facts about each one. We are confident that each and every student who was awarded will be successful wherever their path takes them.
Special thanks to Boy Scout Troop/Pack #3 for posting the colors to begin the reception. Thank you to Blake Utter for coming in person to present the scholarship created by his family many years ago. Thank you to all the donors who made this night possible. Thank you to the Gunter Gift Board who work many hours to keep the foundation going and successful.
Finally, we'd like to give a huge thank you to Lynn Gravley for his enlightening story of how the Kerfoot Scholarship and GIFT came to be. It's stories like that that need to be told over and over again so the knowledge will be passed on to future generations.
Highlights of his speech included some entertaining thoughts about how Mrs. Kerfoot drove Mr. Kerfoot around and he would ride in the back seat because they figured if they got in an accident they would have a better chance of one of them surviving :).
We also learned there were many people involved in the start up of GIFT, but the original idea came from former school board member, Ron Box, (who was in attendance) and former school board member, Roger Streetman, who played an important role in having GIFT give back to the Kerfoot Scholarship to keep that tradition going strong.
Thank you to Mrs. Beverly Millar, who shared many of her mom's notes with Mr. Gravley so he could share the knowledge with this year's recipients.
Gunter would not be the community we all have grown to love without the "Gunter Legends" who began the building process one thought at a time.
The GIFT Foundation works hard all year long raising money to make this happen. Please show your gratitude by thanking them, volunteering, or donating. We appreciate you very much!

One Pill Kills - Presentation
Thank you to Grayson County Criminal District Attorney, Brett Smith, for returning to Gunter ISD and talking to our parents and community about the Fentanyl crisis going on in this country. The Fentanyl crisis is actually closer to Gunter than you think, and you should know the facts.
Earlier in April, GHS and GMS held a student presentation featuring Grayson County Criminal District Attorney, Brett Smith, Maureen Smith from the U.S. Attorney's office, Mark Kosemund for sharing information and stories that will help our students make better decisions.
The presentation was very informative and straight forward. The presentation included points on how the drug was coming into the states and why people might be buying them. They spoke about the danger and how just a tiny amount can affect your respiratory system, which can eventually cause death. They also mentioned the penalties for distributing the drug.
What everyone should know is the people manufacturing Fentanyl are creating pills that look like normal, everyday medications that we buy over the counter. Unfortunately, people who never intended to take the drug are being tricked into taking it, which may result in death.
The bottom line and the biggest factor the students can take away from the presentation is that you should ONLY take medications that have come from your your drug a doctor or a pharmacy.
This is a great conversation to have with your teens. Thank you, Chief Satre, for organizing both presentations.

Elementary in the Classroom
2nd Grade Market
It felt like Canton Trades Days, but really, I had entered the 2nd Grade Market! The students had been working extra hard creating their market and items to sell, and they finally got to set up shop.
Money in hand, I walked in and found so many things to purchase! From goods and services to snacks and beverages, we had bracelets, masks, massages, nail painting, cookies, tea, and so much more! The imagination of these 2nd graders was remarkable! Students in grades K-4 had been earning money in their own classrooms to spend at the market. For each sale, the 2nd grader had to collect the money, make change, and mark their inventory as being sold.
Everyone who entered the market came out with a Zip-loc bag full of great purchases. Great job, 2nd grade!
Hatching Chickens in the 1st Grade Classrooms
Thanks to Donors Choose, all of our first-grade classes were able to experience chickens hatching inside an incubator. It was so "egg-citing" that they shared the opportunity with everyone by live streaming the eggs once they began to show signs of cracking.
After the chickens hatched, Mrs. Locke checked their feathers and performed the "sit up" test (this helps to determine the gender of the chicken). Take a look at the pictures! We are sure this will bring a smile to your face :) The students loved this project tremendously!
Tigers Working Together!
Mrs. Fielding's Kindergarteners and Mrs. Pelzel's 3rd grade buddies were given a paper chain challenge today. They were all given paper, scissors and tape with only 10 minutes to make the longest chain possible. The teams used different strategies had a great time as they learned to problem solve and work together. Great job, Tigers!
Reading Under the Stars and Storybook Dress Up Day
To kick off the book fair, parents and their elementary aged students gathered "under the stars" to read their favorite books. The evening was a special night to just relax and enjoy reading stories together. No distractions --> no technology --> just good old fashioned family time!
The book fair kick off also included Storybook Character Day. Students and teachers dressed as their favorite storybook character. The costumes were awesome!
Reading is the gateway to everything in the world, and we love encouraging young people to pick up a book and get lost in the story!
Thank you to the GES PTO for all of their hard work during the week of the Book Fair! The book fair was a great success! Thank you for all of your purchases.
2nd Grade Pajama Day Musical
2nd grade performed the musical, "Pajama Party" on April 24th. Everyone worked hard to make the production a huge success. Thank you Ms. McCullough for your hard work in directing such a fun show. Also, thank you, parents for your help with memorizing lines, songs, and the creating some awesome set decorations.
Middle School in the Classroom
A huge thank you to Parkhaven Dental for sending our 5th graders on their annual field trip to the Perot Museum of Science. The students explored so many different aspects of science and learned so much. If you have never been, you should go!
This field trip is sponsored annually by Parkhaven Dental and we want them to know how much we appreciate it.
Local Artist, Lauren Miller, visited the upper level Art class at GHS. She shared her macro photography journey and process. Students loved hearing about it and trying out the technique for themselves. Thank you so much, Lauren Miller, for taking time out of your busy day to speak to our students!
5th Grade - Olivia Rigdon
Olivia is involved with 4H and loves fishing, hunting, and playing catch with her dad. Her favorite subject in school is Social Studies. Her favorite musician is Miranda Lambert. Olivia would like to become a veterinarian when she grows up.
6th Grade - Blake Thigpen
Blake is active in football and golf, and likes to play just about any other sport with his friends. He also likes to play video games. His favorite musician is Zach Bryan and his favorite subject is art. In the future, Blake would like to fly with the Blue Angels.
7th Grade - Evelin Galvan
Evelin is involved in basketball at GMS and really likes her science class. She loves to be outdoors and loves to draw. Her favorite musician is Taylor Swift. Evelin would like to become a surgeon's assistant in her future.
8th Grade - Ethan Marks
Ethan is involved in GMS Athletics. He enjoys art, STEAM and science while he is in school. When he is out of school, you can find him working out or hanging out with his friends. His favorite musician is Frank Sinatra and one day wants to run his own business.
High School in the Classroom
On Friday April 7th, Mrs. Boothโs Spanish 1 and 3 students learned how some Spanish speaking countries celebrate Holy Week and Easter. For this cultural activity, the classes watched a short video clip on how Guatemalans make decorative โcarpetsโ on the ground before their Easter processionals. The students then designed and created their own versions using chalk, and they look fabulous!
Volume by Cross Section
Mrs. Wallis is a great teacher who makes learning fun at even the most difficult levels! These posters hanging in the hall of Gunter High School are not only fun to look at, but they are a teaching tool for Volume by Cross Section. Students created posters with a section made into a 3D area. They were tasked to use a formula to calculate the volume of that section. The GHS students who created these are not only smart, but creative too!

Academic UIL Summed Up
Written by Kendel Marks and Alexis Marks
During the month of March, ten students represented Gunter at the Academic UIL District Competition in Bonham, Texas: Kiana Swinfen, Viviana Galvan, Kamber Puebla, Jackson Rue, Drew Smith, Dylan Marsh, Ethan James, Alexis Marks, Kendel Marks and Cristianna Grayard. These students competed in math events, spelling, computer science, and copy editing. Out of the ten students, six advanced to regionals: Viviana, Kamber, Jackson, Dylan, Alexis and Kendel.
They traveled to Tyler, Texas on April 21, and competed the next day. Kamber, Jackson, and Dylan competed in Number Sense, an event that challenges an individualโs ability to use mental math, Viviana competed in Calculator Applications, an event that challenges an individualโs ability to utilize a calculator for difficult math problems, and Kendel and Alexis competed in Copy Editing, an event that challenges an individualโs ability to edit grammar, spelling, political correctness and sentence structure. Although they did not advance to the State UIL Competition, their experience was far from disappointing. Apart from studying, the UIL team spent their time swimming, playing cards and exploring the beautiful Tyler Junior College campus and garden.
Eight of the ten 2023 UIL competitors are graduating this May, leaving only two competitors left in the program. The graduates hope that more students explore beyond their comfort levels to test their limits and broaden their knowledge through academic competition.

Meet the Director Night
We are excited that Mr. Johnson, the new band director, will be on our campus getting to know the students on Wednesday, May 3rd. We would like to invite the band parents to come to the high school between 5:00 - 6:00 PM if you would like to welcome him to the Gunter Tiger family.
Gunter ISD is excited to welcome Adam Johnson to the Tiger family for the 2023-24 school year. Adam is joining the GISD staff as our new Band Director.
In the fall of 2023 Mr. Johnson will be starting his 7th year as a band director. His love of music began at Crestview High School in Florida where he was a prominent member of a renown 6A band program. His outstanding band directors inspired him to pursue a career in teaching music. He followed in their footsteps and attended the school of music at the University of Southern Mississippi. He obtained bachelor degrees in Music Education and Performance at the top of his class. He was then offered an assistantship at Southern Miss and he began teaching while completing his masterโs degree.
Following the advice of his college mentors, Mr. Johnson moved to Texas in 2017 to be amongst the best band programs in the country. He taught at Daingerfield High School for four years; two of which as head director. He then became the head band director at Waskom High School, where he has been for the last two years. Since moving to Texas, his bands have obtained many historic achievements including first-ever sweepstake awards, and appearances at area finals in the most competitive 3A area in the state. Mr. Johnsonโs goal is to inspire his students to love music in the way his directors did for him. He teaches his students how to achieve their goals in all things through the pursuit of excellence.

2023 Gunter Library Neighborhood Challenge
May 1st the Gunter Library will kick off their annual fundraiser, 2023 Gunter Library Neighborhood Challenge. The library is really growing to support all the new Gunter families. As a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization they (100%) depend on local donations to remain open. This annual fundraiser is a friendly competition that challenges families within each Gunter residential community to see who can raise the most donations. These funds are used to buy new books, provide child and adult programs, special community events and pay the bills to ensure we remain open.

Graduation is a special time for our seniors, and we canโt think of a more special place to have the graduation than our own Tiger Field. To make that happen, we have decided to have Graduation on Thursday, May 25th at 8:00 PM. this date gives us the opportunity to make alternative plans in case the weather does not cooperate.
The GRAD Plan:
- Graduation - Thursday, May 25th | 8:00 PM
- In the event of inclement weather on Thursday, Graduation will be held on Friday, May 26th at 9:00 AM
- If bad weather persists throughout both days, Graduation will be moved into the GHS Event Center (Main Gymnasium) and held Friday morning at 10:00 AM. If we have to move the ceremony inside, seating will be limited. Each graduate will be given 10 tickets for family/friends.
We are looking forward to making this event as special as we can for the Class of 2023.
