During the months of May and June, our Lisbon students will take part in many special events including field day, trips, our concerts, and 5th Grade Promotion just to name a few. I speak on behalf of the entire staff when I say we are all so proud of the students' accomplishments this past year.

I also want to take this opportunity to thank our amazing staff for their collaboration, dedication, and enthusiasm!

We are also very grateful for our families support throughout the year. This partnership is key to ensuring our students succeed and feel supported.

During May and June, we have a great deal of content to cover and much work to be done to ensure our students are 100% prepared for the next grade level. Please be sure students are here each day on time, as attendance is key to their success.

May 8- 12 is designated as Teacher Appreciation Week! During this week, we honor teachers and recognize the lasting contributions they make to our lives! At Lisbon, we are fortunate to have the best teachers and staff in the world!

We extend our sincere thanks to our AWESOME and AMAZING PTA and community for all of their generous support during staff appreciation week! We feel so valued and loved! A special shout out to the staff appreciation committee, Mrs. Castiglia & Mrs. Crum, PTA President, Mrs. Datz, and the parents who have contributed to make this week so special for staff.

Congratulations to our Strings performers on a great concert last night! It was a wonderful culmination of their musical journey this year. Thank you to Mr. Carter for all his hard work with our students in strings this year. We are looking forward to our band, chorus, and hand bells concert on Tuesday, May 23rd!

You must be pre-registered as a volunteer to attend the field day event and are required to sign-in at the front lobby for your volunteer spot. Parents will not be authorized to only watch the festivities. Parent volunteers may not bring younger siblings with them.

With the end of the year approaching, now is a great time to remind families about the early childhood programming options in HCPSS. Please include the following Pre-K and kindergarten registration information in your newsletters, marquees, and other community messages.

• Pre-K: Families of children who will be four years old by September 1, 2023 may apply for Pre-K. For an application and more information about the program and 2023-2024 eligibility, please visit the HCPSS website. Parents/guardians should submit a completed application to hcpss_pk@hcpss.org or to their local elementary school. Pre-K Program Location fliers and posters have been distributed to all elementary schools; electronic versions of Pre-K applications and advertising fliers can be accessed on Canvas.

Kindergarten: Registration for the 2023-2024 school year is open! Families of children who will be five years old by September 1, 2023 should enroll their child in kindergarten or submit a kindergarten waiver. “It’s Time to Register for Kindergarten” fliers and posters have been distributed to all elementary schools; electronic files can be accessed on Canvas. Families can find more information about enrolling children in kindergarten, as well as resources to support kindergarten readiness, the kindergarten waiver, and more on the HCPSS website.

THANK YOU to our Lisbon families & staff who came out to Jersey Mike's Subs last week for our restaurant give back event! Because of your incredible support, Jersey Mike's will be donating $150 back to our Lisbon Elementary School PTA!

As we get close to the end of this school year, we are in the process of planning for the 2023-24 school year. One important piece of that planning process is input from you about your child.

No one knows a child better than his/her parent(s). With that in mind, I encourage you to complete the Lisbon Elementary Helpful Hints form below. The purpose of this form is for you to share specific information or helpful hints with the staff that will give next year’s teachers some information from you about your child.

When placing students, the staff, and administration utilize a wide range of criteria that are supportive of the Howard County philosophy of heterogeneous grouping. Some of these criteria include, but are not limited to:

- the personality of the child

- the gender balance in each classroom

- math strengths and needs

- written output

- test results

- reading strengths and needs

- special education requirements; IEP goals

- structured versus non-structured needs

- information from previous teachers and school counselor.

Administrators, your child’s current teachers, and your child’s 2023-24 teachers will read the form you fill out. With that in mind, PLEASE DO NOT use this form for any of the following:

1. Specific teacher requests

2. Comments (positive or negative) about staff members

3. Grouping with friends

4. Isolating students from other students

Your input on this form will be used in our planning for your child rather than a letter requesting a specific teacher. Your response is OPTIONAL but is a very valuable source of information to the school staff and to the next teacher.

According to HCPSS Policy 9000 - Student Residency, Eligibility, Enrollment, and Assignment, "A student attending a public school in Howard County will attend the designated school serving the school attendance area in which the parents have bona fide residence."

If you have moved or are moving soon, please notify us immediately. Please do not wait for us to find out through other means. We can assist you with transitioning to your child's new school. Whether it be another HCPSS school, a private school, or a school out of the HCPSS district, we are here to help. If you are transferring to another HCPSS school, our registrars will partner to make the transition as smooth as possible.

If you have an address change, please fill out the attached fillable Address Change Form below and email it back to us with your new deed or lease. It is very important for us to have the most accurate information about your residency

Families whose students are eligible for HCPSS-provided transportation are required to register by June 1 to receive bus service for the coming 2023-2024 school year. Families who reside in non-transportation areas and those who have students who receive transportation as part of their Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan do not need to take any action.

YOU MUST REGISTER FOR BUS TRANSPORTATION FOR 2023-2024.

Here's how to do it:

• Select MORE OPTIONS
  
• Select 2023-2024 TRANSPORTATION SELECTION
• Use the pull down menu to select your child.
• There is a pull down menu that states: "My child will access the bus to Lisbon Elementary School".....You must select "yes" or "no"
• IF you select "yes", two check boxes appear. Check all boxes that are applicable for your child
  
• Repeat for EACH CHILD you have at HCPSS.

I recommend doing this ON A COMPUTER.

If your student will be absent for 3 or more days, please fill out the Extended Absence/Discretionary Absence form (see below) and return it to the front office.

On May 12, 2023, Lisbon Elementary will be holding its 1st ever Lisbon Lions Staff vs. The Harlem Wizards Basketball Game. The Harlem Wizards are excited to be coming to your community to play a game of trick basketball with teachers from Lisbon. This evening of fun and laughter is being organized by the PTA and is a FUN(d)raising event. This will be our biggest event in the last several years and we need your support of the school, students, and staff by becoming a sponsor. There are multiple levels of participation:

Level 1: T-Shirt Sponsor - $300 per business:

Up to 2 businesses will have their name/logo printed on all volunteer jerseys for game day.

Level 2: Foul Shot Sponsor: $150+

Your business name/logo will be printed on marketing materials at the event and on a sponsor banner showcased outside of Lisbon ES through the end of the year.

Level 3: Lay-up Sponsor: $20 - $150

General donations that go to support the event are greatly appreciated and go a long way!

Hello from Walking Wednesday, our optional walk-for-charms program, which runs most Wednesdays during recess when the weather cooperates!

This year our students have already walked over 1,700 miles and have earned an equivalent 1,700 charms!

The Last Lap, our end of year celebration, will be May 31st (rain date of June 2nd)! Students will have the opportunity to collect any last charms they have earned, in addition to special charms and prizes for goals they have reached! With 4 weeks left, walkers still have time to complete the required THREE (3) miles needed to participate, as well as help us reach our school goal of 2,000 miles! Hope to see you there (volunteer training requirements must have been met)!

FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITY-If you would like to support our program, please consider purchasing a personalized toe charm for your child’s necklace! They are $5 each and include your child’s name, nickname or initials!

Lisbon PTA hosts fun family events and activities through the school year including many free to attend.

Volunteering is not a requirement with membership; however, we would love to have you!
