Holy Cross Catholic School
From the Desk of Dr. Melissa Wagner
August 24, 2023
This week we have had so much fun going over procedures and getting adjusted to our new routines. It has been a great week even through the challenges thrown our way. Our teaches and staff handled the unexpected heat wave like champs. They were resilient and battled through the afternoons with lights off, blinds closed and indoor recess. I am in awe of our amazing community every single day. What a blessing to work here with all the amazing students, families and staff. You know you are in the right place when you are excited to go to work each day.
On Thursday, our K-8 students joined together for our first All School Mass in the school gym due to the extreme heat, but that did not make it any less special. The teachers led while Fr. Oswlado delivered an impactful homily about how our students and staff are the Church and it is our responsibility to Be Holy Cross everywhere we go. Mr. and Mrs. Rick Worms had our students and school community singing God's praises. Alleluia! What a great way to start the year!
We ended the week with a Back to School Assembly planned by our wonderful staff Assembly Committee. We played games together, reviewed our theme for the year and discussed how to be Holy Cross (Caring, Responsible, Obedient, Successful, Stewards). The first week was such a success, I cannot wait to see what this year has in store for us!
We are excited to see everyone at Back to School Night next Tuesday, August 29th. Please make sure to review the handbook beforehand.
Meet our new art teacher, Mrs. Kortney Greer
Hello,
My name is Kortney Greer, and I am very excited to be teaching art at Holy Cross this year. I am originally from Alabama where I received my Bachelor’s of Science in Education from Auburn University at Montgomery. I have over 13 years of teaching experience, and absolutely love teaching art! My classroom is an encouraging and safe environment where kids are inspired to create without fear of failing. My hope is that every student will connect with their inner artist and develop a love for Visual Arts. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, concerns, or suggestions. I look forward to working with you this year.
Sincerely,
Kortney Greer

FROM THE NURSES
Archdiocesan Policy for Snacks/Treats in the Classroom
There is an Archdiocesan Policy for bringing snacks and treats into the classroom. We are required to follow it as are all the schools in the archdiocese.
The policy states that snacks and treats brought into the classroom must be in prepackaged wrappers with the ingredients listed on the label. They MUST be peanut / tree nut / dairy free for classrooms that have these allergies in them.
Home baked foods are NOT allowed in any classroom.
Bakery shop and donut shop items are ONLY allowed in those classrooms that do NOT have a peanut / tree nut / dairy allergy, but they MUST have an ingredient label on them.
To ensure safe snacks and treats in the classrooms, be sure to read the ingredients list and the “may contain” statement and also look to see if there is a “processed in a factory that also processes peanuts and/or tree nuts” statement.
WE ARE REQUIRED TO SEND BACK HOME any snack or treat that is considered unsafe in a classroom that has a food allergy. Attention to the ingredients label will prevent this from happening. You can also call us ahead to ask.
We are sorry that we are unable to provide you with a “safe snacks list” due to the fact that manufacturers often change back and forth between processing plants and factories, therefore the snack may be safe one month and unsafe the next month, according to which plant or factory the snacks were made in.
We hope that this information helps! We are sorry that the policy may make it a little more difficult to choose snacks and treats you would like to send, but you can feel good knowing that the affected children and their families who have to live with these life threatening allergies are very appreciative of your efforts and attention to this matter.
Please feel free to call or email the nurse office if you have any questions about possible allergies in your child’s class or to check on a safe snack. We are always happy to help you. Thank you so much!!
