What's Happening??!!
~ Hawley School Newsletter: December 6, 2020 ~
From the (HOME OFFICE) Desk of Mr. Moretti.....
Dear Hawley Parents/Guardians, Teachers, and Staff,
Well, Remote Learning it is (through Winter Recess), with a return January 4 in Hybrid with the hope for All In shortly after. It is OK (Lazy River Ride ;0). There are so many competing contradictory theories and opinions, someone is always happy and someone is always disappointed. Whatever we are asked to do, we will do to the best of our ability. That is the Hawley Way!
Buckle up, keep your hands and feet in the car, and stay seated at all times, as you read on to find out What's Happening at Hawley .......
A Message from Central Office....
As you are aware, the decision has been made to keep our schools in remote learning through December 23rd. This was a very difficult decision, made out of concern for everyone’s health and safety. Keep in mind that had we returned in the hybrid model, each cohort would only have had an additional 5 in-person days as compared to remaining in full remote prior to the holiday recess.
We remain hopeful that all K-12 students will return to our schools in the hybrid model following the break and that all students will return in full to school soon after that.
Wednesdays will continue to be a 3-hour early release day for students, regardless of the model. Teachers will share a more detailed weekly schedule with students and parents, in advance, as they have typically been doing. Any changes implemented will begin Thursday, 12/10.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to your building principal or your child’s teacher.
PJ Day Fundraiser
In the Hawley tradition of Kindness Month (December), we continue to support this cause. We see no reason why Remote Learning should stop us from helping those in need, therefore, EVERYONE can wear PJs Friday with a donation of at least $1.00 (made online).

To make a donation: Click HERE (although the link in the flyer is live)
Please join us in this endeavor and make Friday a Fun, Comfy-Cozy Day (we NEED it)!!
~ Counselor's Resources ~
Our school counselor (Mrs. Shapiro) has created an interactive virtual office space for the students to explore and use whenever they would like.
It contains different slides and the items in the rooms have links that can be clicked to bring up different resources such as:
- Read Alouds
- Videos
- A form to submit a note of thanks to any staff member
- A check-in request form for students that want to meet with the counselor.
In addition, if any parent would like to request a 1:1 Google Meet session between their child and Mrs. Shapiro, you can complete this check-in sign up form. Parents can also email Mrs. Shapiro with questions or concerns (shapirok@newtown.k12.ct.us).
Lexia Reading Program
We are carving out time for them to be on it in school. We realize that since devices have been returned to school, it may be a hardship to do at home. If there is any device at home (desktop, laptop, ipad), it would be very helpful for your child to spend some time on this program. It can be nightly, every couple of days, or even on weekends. Whatever you can do will help your child. We are not making it homework while devices are with us, but it is strongly encouraged.
Every student has an account that has been shared by teachers. If you are unable to find it, please reach out to your child's teacher. Our Language Arts Consultant, Mrs. Vitarelli, has created a Parent Video that goes over how children can log in to Core5 and what the student interface looks like. Ignore the pre-test information as students have already taken it. Click HERE for the video.
This is something that students should be able to do independently. Your support is greatly appreciated.
PTA CreativeFundraisers
Our PTA does so much to support our school and provide wonderful experiences and materials for our students and staff. They have continued to do so even this year under difficult circumstances. They have developed some easy, fun and creative Fundraising ideas that they feel you will enjoy, which will also allow them to continue to do provide to Hawley School.
Board and Brush is located in Danbury. Traditionally they host in studio events that generate funds for non-profit fundraising. However, given the current climate, the company has agreed to sell an at home craft kit. The kits are sold for $25 each and can be picked up at the store the week the kit is purchased. The company will donate 20% of funds raised from the sale of the kits to our PTA. You can click HERE for more information and here is the link to order your kit(s):

ShopwithScrip is an online distributor that sells gift cards to use with major companies. The companies then donate back a % of the cost of the gift card to our PTA. This can be done through an app or directly on the website. What’s great about the gift card campaign, is that it can continue year round. You can click HERE for more information and here is the link to sign up and begin ordering:
