Civil Engineering

Ginormous parking lots,
Towering skyscrapers,
and broad bridges all have one thing in common. Can you guess what it is!?
What is Civil Engineering?
Engineering is a branch of science and technology. It deals with designing and building. They also can study machines and structures. So Civil Engineering is just a wide range of fields in design and construction of physical and natural structures. They build lay out parking lots, bridges, skyscrapers, even some monuments.
Types of Civil Engineers
Construction Engineering
Construction engineering is the planning and maintenance of the structures. These engineers are in the field of the project all the way until the end.
Structural Engineering
Structural Engineers are the ones responsible for, well the structures. They make sure a building is going to stay up for a long time safely. They put into account everything from climate, to weight that will be put on it in everyday use.
Material Engineering
Ever heard of the 3 little piggies and the big bad wolf? When you read it, you found that only one house didn't fall down when the big bad wolf huffed and puffed. The house that stayed up was made of brick. When it comes to building, and in this case, civil engineering, materials really do matter. This job is saved for the material Engineers. They make sure the material used to build something is OK to use with the climate or weathering, or any other problem the structure it might go through.
Education of Civil Engineers
OK. This one's a little tricky. Because Civil engineering is such a broad field, for each individual one you need to know different things. Here's some basics though. Firstly, mathematics is really important. You will want to take advanced classes in high school such as calculus or trigonometry. You also might want to put into account computers because that will help you strive as a civil engineer too. If you study climate and where to build something, science might be right for you too. Once again, there is such a wide range of jobs in Civil Engineering, so you just need to know what will help you in that field of it.
How does Civil Engineers Change the World
Civil Engineering Motivational Video
Please watch this video from the beginning to the 1:06 minute mark. It is a really cool video of some of the things civil engineers did and still do for us. If your in a school right now, a Civil Engineer designed the structure. That's why it is still standing today. Even your home was designed by a Civil Engineer. You might not of known they existed until now, but a lot of things around you are because of them.
Daily life of a Civil Engineers
In a normal day, civil engineers may spend their time in meetings, discussing structures, designs, and plans. They devise a plan and then usually there are more than one going around, so it takes a while to come to agreement.
If that step is already finished, they might have to go talk to the contractor about the plans in building the project. If the contractor agrees, they continue to building. If not, it's back to the office to come up with a new plan. That is usually not the case though, and they usually are ready to move on.
Time to build! On some days, civil engineers might be at a construction site, making sure everything goes smoothly. So when you think about it, civil engineer jobs can be from a boring office job, all the way to the construction site.
