The BBC Visits 5th Grade
On Monday, May 13th Indian Mills Memorial School had the pleasure of a visit from two special guests from England who have very interesting careers. They shared with Ms. Almond and Ms. Carr’s students the importance of language arts and how it is used in all areas of life, especially careers
Ms. Phillippa Guillou is a journalist for The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). She researches and creates news entries on stories all around the world. She has to condense these stories into sixty-second clips. Ms. Daisy Stone is a Casting Researcher in TV and Advertising. Unlike Ms. Guillou who is the one on camera every day, Ms. Stone is behind the scenes doing her work.
Ms. Almond and Ms. Carr showed their classes a slideshow on the women’s steps to success and what their jobs entail. Ms. Guillou printed out a real news story from that day- “It’s A Boy!” The students read the news story on the new royal baby and created their own news report (60 seconds or less). The students worked extremely hard and acted as if they were news reporters. Ms. Guillou and Ms. Stone gave their expert tips on how to create a news story. This was a great success, and the students enjoyed every second of this special visit!
Project PRIDE
On Thursday, May 2, 2019, a Project Pride presentation was given to the eighth-grade students of Indian Mills Memorial School. The emphasis of the Project Pride program centers on personal experiences (usually drug related) of four inmates and the consequences of making destructive decisions. The facilitator, Angela Kellam, from the New Jersey Office of Educational Services, introduces the program, and each inmate is given approximately ten minutes to discuss his/her personal story. Additionally, the inmates briefly discuss the realities of prison life. A question and answer period follows prior to the close of the presentation.
Student response to this presentation is very positive, and the benefit of exposing them to the realities of bad decision-making is powerful.
