The Eastern Local Alumni and Friends Endowment was created to support academic, cultural, and extracurricular student activity opportunities for Eastern Local School District's students, and all those who work with them - including, for example: Athletic teams, Music or Art programs, after school programing, or any other student activities.

A part of the Meigs County Foundation Family of Funds, the fund is a new way for alumni, friends, and supporters of academic excellence and student engagement in extracurricular activities to provide contributions outside traditional funding sources. The Fund helps to ensure permanent resources for programs and activities that enhance and enrich the educational experience of students and teachers.

Gifts to the Fund will help create new opportunities across the Eastern Local School District for students as well as support multiple current student activity organizations. As a result of a matching opportunity provided by the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio and Meigs County Foundation, all gifts to the fund will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $5,000 per donor while matching funds are available.

We recently received confirmation that the district track meet was moved to May 19th, the original night scheduled for graduation. Because of this we are going to move our graduation to 2:00 on the afternoon of Sunday, May 21st. We apologize for any inconveniences, but we want to give our students every opportunity to participate in these two events that they have worked so hard for. Children entering Kindergarten in the Fall of 2023 in the Eastern Local School District must be 5 years old on or before August 1, 2023.

Items required at registration:

• An official Birth Certificate*

• Complete Immunization Record

• Proof of Residency

• Custody Documents (if applicable)

• Parent Identification

* birth records given to you by the hospital will not be accepted, these are not legal documents

All must be in the name of the parent/legal guardian and show the physical address, not a PO Box.

If the custodial parent/legal guardian is not a resident of the Eastern Local School District, a request for open enrollment must be submitted on the district Open Enrollment Application. Due to class size, all requests may not be granted. Children applying for open enrollment must also be registered in their district of residence.

The school buses can be viewed by appointment by calling 740-985-4468. They are located at the bus garage in Tuppers Plains, Ohio. Bids are to be mailed to or received at the Eastern Local Administrative Office at 50008 State Route 681, Reedsville, OH 45772. The bids must be sealed and clearly labeled “Bid for Surplus Equipment”. Bids must be received by noon on Monday, March 20, 2023. The board reserves the right to reject some or all bids. Successful bidders will be approved at the regular board of education meeting on Thursday, March 23, 2023. Titles for the buses will not be released until cash is received by the treasurer’s office or check has cleared the bank. Titles will not be released until signatures can be notarized.

Six Eastern sophomores took on Cleveland, Ohio to work through the final portions of their student-led research project for The Ohio State University Student Leadership Research Collaborative.

These six students have worked incredibly hard to identify something they want to make better in their school and community. They've crafted and administered surveys to students and alumni with overwhelming support. In fact, can you believe they've received over 200 alumni surveys.

We have an amazing community and these students are working to develop their leadership skills to bring about positive change. If and when you see them, ask them about their experiences in the OSU Student Leadership Research Collaborative.

I can't wait to reveal their proposed solutions and watch them enjoy the fruits of their labor.

Throughout the month of March, our Careers classes will be welcoming a variety of community professionals to speak on their career and shed some light on the many paths our students can pursue. We are so thankful for the willingness of these amazing people to share their career and spend the day with us!

On Friday, February 24th, ELSD in partnership with Ohio Valley Bank recognized and honored our students of the quarter. The honorees were Jace Bullington, Abby Smeeks, and Jacob Spencer. Once each quarter we honor three of our top senior students by inviting the students and their parents to a catered luncheon supplied by Chef Austin Cole. Representatives from OVB, Tony Staley & Jason Booher, spoke to the students and congratulated them for their accomplishments. Each student was given a gift bag and a certificate commemorating their achievement. Eastern Middle School Math teacher Rebecca Otto was recognized by the Coalition of Rural and Appalachian Schools for her outstanding work in the classroom. She is pictured with her award along with representatives from the Ohio Department of Education, Former State Representative John Patterson, and Eastern Local Superintendent Nick Dettwiller. Hallie Simpson has been selected to receive a Teacher Scholarship from the Center for the Collaborative Classroom. Thanks to contributions from generous donors, the Collaborative Classroom makes annual awards of curriculum and professional learning to K-12 educators nationwide. This year, over 1,000 educators applied for scholarships. Hallie will be receiving SIPPS Challenge Level Kit. SIPPS is a systematic, differentiated foundational skills program that enables students to become fluent and confident readers and writers. This research based program has an accelerative scope and sequence and is differentiated at the student’s point of need.

Hi! My name is Thomas Faber, your Spring 2023 COMCorps Wellness Member for Eastern Local Schools. This year I will be assisting our nurse, Mrs. Moore, with first aid, promoting healthy habits, and encouraging active lifestyles. I am originally from Wyoming and have a lot of experience in the outdoor recreation and athletics fields. I am passionate about making a difference in the lives of young people, and I want to make lasting contributions to this community. You will see me throughout the school doing various activities, helping students maintain and improve their health. I look forward to getting to know the community and helping in any way possible!

Last Saturday our Varsity Baseball and Softball teams hosted clinics for our youth athletes as parents got to sign them up to play this spring and enjoy an amazing spread of breakfast from Mount Hermon Church. So thankful for our coaches, our varsity players for being great role models and teachers, our youth presidents, and the amazing people who donated their time, and culinary skills to our kids and our community.

Stronger Together

These little things are what makes our school great. A program started about 15 years ago pairs up 7th grade students with 1st grade students to share the love of reading. So thankful for our teachers making this happen, and our kids for being such great mentors and sharing their love of reading with the next generation.

The High School Student Council would like to send a huge thank you to all the student, staff and community donors during our blood drive last week! We are always humbled to see the selfless people in our area do more than their part of help someone in need. Through the generosity of others, we were able to assist the American Red Cross in collecting 26 units of blood to potentially save 78 peoples lives in addition to helping us climb our way to another scholarship for one of our Senior students furthering their education after graduation. Thank you all so much for such a great turnout!

I love walking our halls. In a short walk I hear Spanish, Romeo and Juliet, Trigonometry, a speaker from a local business, kids playing guitar, kids doing woodworking and hydroponics, weightlifting, STEM and engineering projects, art displays everywhere, and that’s in one morning. Very proud of our staff and the work they do for our kids, and proud of our kids for trying new projects. Our Vo Ag program is taking off and it’s so great to see kids blossom, and engage in a different way at school. They were doing woodworking this morning, but were quick to point out their hydroponics work, and several other projects. Keep it up!

This evening we were able to recognize and celebrate our senior girls for all their accomplishments through their basketball season. Our seniors recognized were, Ella Carleton, Erica Durst, Julie Durst, and Sydney Reynolds. The girls also pulled off a victory for their last regular season home game against Belpre as well! Congratulations to these young ladies and coaching staff. Your hard work is certainly recognized, and I hope you enjoyed every moment of the evening!

High School Physical Education students were given the opportunity to participate in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) with our amazing archery coaches. They learned how to shoot a compound bow safely and effectively while following proper NASP rules. A huge thank you goes out to our archery coaches that volunteered their time and provided resources for our students to learn a lifetime skill and participate in some friendly competition!

On Thursday 2/16/23, Eastern was able to host a high school wrestling event and recognize our only senior wrestler, Colton Bailey. The kids participating did an excellent job. Congratulations to all of you!

Thursday, February 3, 2023, Seth Collins competed in the District FFA Public Speaking contest hosted at Racine Southern. Being the President of the Eastern FFA Chapter, Seth stepped up to the challenge of being the first Eastern FFA member to compete in a FFA contest. Seth placed 1st in Meigs County and 10th overall in the District. Congratulations Seth for your accomplishments!

Eastern Jr. Sr. High School students had the opportunity to sit through a presentation about teen dating safety and awareness provided by the Meigs County Prosecutor’s office. Our presenters were Shelly Kimber and Amber Titus. They both did a fantastic job and we were pleased to have them!

We are halfway through our 6th grade D.A.R.E class. This year the student's continue to impress me with their abilities to not only grasp the curriculum, but to expand on the skills given to them through the Dare Decision Making Model. This model is intended to help them in order to face any negative pressure that they might face as they mature into the model citizens that they are destined to become.

Mrs. Hopkins 4th grade class just finished learning about the American Revolution. Mr. Barnhart our School Resource Officer spoke about life in the “Virginia Backcountry” and the significance of our area during the war, more specifically the Battle of Point Pleasant, and the vital role the militia and Continental Army played in winning the war.

Our District led by School Resource Officer Deputy Barnhart recently went through a reunification drill for our entire staff and several local agencies helped and evaluated. This was a great learning experience for everyone and helps keep our staff and students safe. Our team does an outstanding job of working through all of our safety trainings and protocols and being as prepared as possible.

We recently received our ELLP approval and the roof replacement for the High School will begin as soon as school is out. We also are getting ready to take bids on replacing several of our HVAC units in the High School and Elementary. These units right now have a 30 week lead time, so we are trying to work on a package to pre purchase them so that we can get them from the factory as they are built to try and get them faster, but nothing is guaranteed. We also got $200,000 from a safety grant we wrote for replacing doors. Once again though there are long lead times, so we are working through that as well. We also have some painting, blind installation, plumbing, and tile work planned for this summer, and our maintenance crew is working on our athletics building now doing some remodeling from some water damage.

All of these projects and moving preschool and administrative offices on campus also help get us ready for the possible PK-12 renovation we are working on. Our current OFCC rank is 132 out of over 600 schools in the state for a building project with the State covering 76% of a total renovation. We are also working with legislators trying to get the Appalachian Accelerated Bill into this budget cycle to help move us up on that list and cut down on the total that our tax base would have to cover.
