Read by Grade Three Law Info!
The following provides information on the Read by Grade Three law:
Read by Grade Three (RBG3) law of 2016 (MCL 380.1280f)
Michigan’s state legislature passed the Read by Grade Three law in October 2016, which requires students to possibly repeat third grade if they are not proficient in reading based on their ELA M-STEP score. If this is the case, the student’s parent or guardian will receive a letter sent by certified mail from the Center for Educational Performance and Instruction (CEPI) that says that the student may need to be retained in third grade.

The Future of Read by Grade Three Law
Public Act 7 of 2023 (MCL 380.1280f-amended) is bipartisan legislation that repeals the retention component of the Read by Grade Three (RBG3) law.
