Dear CMIT Parents/Guardians,
The 2024-2025 lottery for Charter Schools is now open! If your child has any siblings that are not currently enrolled in Chesapeake Math & IT North, but you wish to enroll them, now is the time to enter for a seat for the upcoming school year. Please be mindful that a sibling is a brother or sister by blood, marriage, or adoption. They must be living in the same household (friends, cousins or two separate families living under the same roof do not qualify as siblings.) If your potential student does not have a student ID number please reach out to your boundary school to obtain one.

Have you applied/reapplied for Free and Reduced Priced Meals?
Free or reduced-price meals are available to students based on household size and income. If income falls below the amount listed below for household size, then students living within the household may qualify for free or reduced-price meals. Students are automatically eligible for free meals if the family receives assistance under the Food Supplement Program or Temporary Cash Assistance (TCA) benefits.
Changes and/or status changes occur every year. This year there will be a price category change as of October 11, 2023. Please be sure to apply or reapply in the event your price category is affected by this change.

Attendance
Please note we have implemented a Google form for submission of absences/late arrivals and notes. This form is the only acceptable method of communication and must be utilized for reporting absences/late arrivals and uploading doctor/medical notes ONLY for your student(s). With the exception of COVID reporting in which an email in addition to the absence form must be sent to Nurse Ann, Dr. Fryson and Mrs. Virgil.

ABSENT NOTE SUBMISSION: Please complete this form within three (3) days once your child returns to instruction. Excused absences cannot be placed into SchoolMax until AFTER the child returns to instruction. Family vacations and trips are not considered excused absences. Refer to the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook for further clarification regarding excused and unexcused absences.

Nurse Updates
Nurse Ann and the School Health Services strongly recommend wearing a mask and keeping one available in your child's backpack.
Please help yourself and others -- keep your scholars home when they are not well.
Immunizations
Immunizations must be up-to-date and received by the school nurse to prevent exclusion from school.
Medication forms are attached. Please hand carry newly prescribed medication in the pharmacy packaging. Any adult may deliver the medication to the nurse. (appointments must be made)
CMITNES PTO INFORMATION
Grub for Grandparents will be held on Friday, January 26th, 2024. This event is held in person to celebrate grandparents and the important role you play in your scholars’ success. During this time you (the grandparents) will be able to experience your scholars classroom and enjoy breakfast with them. The purpose of this is to allow grandparents to observe the classroom setting as well as share a little about yourself with your scholar, classmates, and teacher. This is a very popular event and we need your help to make it a success. Please RSVP by completing the registration form by Friday, January 19th.
To complete the registration form be prepared to:
1. Complete a separate form for each grandparent that is attending.
2. Have each (grandparent) driver's license ready to upload.
3. Have your scholar(s) teachers names and grade available.
CMIT North Elementary and Parent Teacher Organization take the safety of our scholars as a top priority. Providing this information in advance allows us to avoid long waits for drivers license scanning upon entering the school. Kind Kindergarten News!
Hello Kindergarten Families:
Happy New Year! Winter is finally here; please make sure that your scholar is dressed appropriately for the weather for outdoor recess.
ELA: We will work on folktales and syllables, and respond and analyze.
Social Studies: We will work on citizenship.
Math: We will be working on decomposing numbers 6 and 7 to solve problems.
Science: We will work on living vs non-living things.
*Your scholar should be working on their STEM fair project.

*Friendly reminder: If your scholar is sick or not feeling well, please keep them home. They should not be in school with a fever, a cough that disrupts their ability to focus and concentrate on their lessons.

First Grade
Fascinating First Grade News!
Hello First Grade Families:
First grade will have their field trip on Tuesday this week. Students must arrive on time to school, if they are going on the field trip. Please have your scholar arrive in their school uniform, and ensure they are wearing socks. (Port Discovery has various interactive activities and some call for shoes to be removed).
We will be departing at 8:30 a.m. and returning at 2:00 p.m. Please remember to bring a bagged lunch for this day.
Continue to work on the STEM fair projects, as they are due 1/29.
In the next few weeks, we will begin our winter testing; this includes, MAP, DRA, and Dibels (dates to come).

Spectacular Second Grade News!
Happy New Year!
Thank you to each and everyone of you who sent in gifts of appreciation over the holiday. It was much appreciated. We are now ready for the second half of the school year. Next week, we will be starting Unit 3, theme Our Traditions. In Math, we will finish up topic 7, more solving problems involving addition and subtraction and prepare for the assessment. We will also prepare for Topic 8 which focuses on identifying and counting coins and bills, solving word problems about money, and telling time. In Science, we will continue with topic 3, Earth's Water and Land. In Social Studies, we will continue topic 3, Government.
We kindly request your support in reinforcing the importance of following our School Motto with your scholars. I will Respect Myself and Others, I will Opt to Be Scholarly, I will Act Responsibly, and I will React with Kindness.

Terrific Third Grade News!
In Social Studies, students will take the Chapter three assessment. Students will begin Chapter 4: Lesson 1 American Government.
This week in Math, scholars are taking their Topic 8 Assessment on various subtraction and addition strategies involving estimation. Then scholars are taking a cumulative benchmark to review everything taught so far this school year.
In Science, scholars are starting our new topic on climate, learning about the weather patterns of areas over a long period of time. Also STEAM fair projects are due at the end of the month!
Fourth Grade
Weekly News!
Students will review concepts taught in Unit 2 and take the Unit 2 assessment next Tuesday. In Social Studies, we will finish learning about our nation's economy and begin stusying the Northeast region. In Math, students will use number lines and area models to identify equivalent fractions. In Science, students will describe how the use of different natural energy resources affects the local and global environments.

Fabulous Fifth Grade News!
Happy New Year! We hope your new year is off to a great start! Thank you to all the supporters of our holiday celebrations last month and making it a success! Great job to all the participants in the school wide spelling bee that took place on December 21st! Each scholar did an amazing job! Congratulations to Brenden Livingston who is our spelling bee champion for CMIT 5th grade! He will move on to the Regional Spelling Bee for a chance to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in D.C.! Go CMIT North Elementary!
STEM Project:
STEM projects are in full effect! They are due by January 29th, 2024. Please ensure you are working daily on your projects. Project packets were sent for supportive resources and directions so that you are successful. If you have any questions, please see your teacher for any support you may need. We are here to help! We know that your projects will be informative and creative! Good job in advance! Let's go Tigers!

We are still working in earth's systems with atmosphere and hydrosphere.
RELA
Scholars will begin Unit 3 Week 1: "Love, Amalia" which will include learning the skills of "analyzing characters" and "making connections" to characters and their roles in the text and how it may apply to the reader. Scholars will learn words with latin roots -port, -dict, -ject, -terr. Students will continue to explore opinion writing concepts by comparing and contrasting claims. Happy reading 5th grade!

Greetings,
Tigers have studio time this week. Classes will primarily consist of independent work to plan and work on their projects. Projects include portraits, still life, architecture, and other activities that develop their understanding of shapes and value in 3D images. We will continue to stress planning and craftsmanship.

This engaging video-based learning object provides the learner with foundational knowledge about the importance of protecting their personal information. The learner will understand that they shouldn't share any personal information online or agree to meet anyone they don’t know and trust; and they should always log off or lock their device to protect their personal information.
3-5 students practiced: Commenting in the Virtual Classroom:
In this animated video, Trey introduces the learner to an online classroom, his class message board, the right ways to leave comments online, and what to do if you see someone cyberbullying.
PE
Hello, this week in PE, we are reviewing skills we’ve covered this year so far. I just want to make sure we remember the safety rules in order to maintain a safe and fun environment.
STEM I
Greetings! K-5 are working on engineering designs to solve real world problems. Students are practicing using the Engineering and Design Process. Students are working on team building skills. Students are becoming critical thinkers!

In STEM II, kindergarten students will finish building their dog houses. First grade students will create their trip activity pamphlets based on the season that their group is assigned. Second grade students are working to complete building their bridges. Third grade students will continue to build their pinball machines. Fourth grade students will continue coding. Fifth grade students will begin coding.
