Rio Hondo Middle School 5th-8th grade math teachers actively participated in the final meeting of the Middle School Math Matters Grant on Tuesday, January 30, 2024. The grant's initiative was to improve student outcomes in middle school math through high impact professional learning during the Spring and Fall of 2023. The opportunity included three primary components: expert led math professional learning focused on evidence-based math instructional practices; a continuous improvement implementation process to test and refine new practices; and a network model to accelerate change. . The grant was made possible through the Region One ESC Mathematics Department along with RGV FOCUS (Educate Texas), and the University of Texas Charles A. Dana Center in Austin. Participants for Rio Hondo Middle School included: Ramiro Moreno, Principal; Amanda Quintana and Criselda Martinez, 5th grade Math; Elida Ruiz, 6th grade Math; Edna Sandoval, 7th Grade Math; Alfredo Infante, 8th Grade Math; and Jesus Cruz, 6th-8th grade Math Resource.
Additionally, Rio Hondo Middle School was selected by the University of Texas Charles A. Dana Center to videotape research based instructional math practices being implemented with our RHMS students. Participants included 5th, 6th, and 7th grade students with their teachers, Mrs. Criselda Martinez, Mrs. Elida Ruiz, and Ms. Edna Sandoval, respectively. Below are numerous snapshots of Rio Hondo Middle School students as they are being videotaped in action. These videos will be utilized in the future to provide professional development to math teachers state-wide.
