Curriculum Focus:
Each week we will share with you what our Year 7, 8 and 9, 10 and 11 students are learning in our focus departments this term, below you will find the topics for English:
Year 7 – Dystopian Fiction
This term Year 7 are looking at dystopian fiction and have so far read extracts from The Hunger Games, 1984, and Delirium and will be reading full short stories later on this term. They are focusing on features of dystopian fiction such as setting, characters and totalitarian governments ready for their dystopian writing module next term.
Questions:
- What is the difference between a Utopia and a Dystopia?
- What is the best text that you have studied so far this term? Why did you enjoy it?
Year 8 – The Tempest
In our year 8 curriculum, we're currently reading William Shakespeare's "The Tempest." Throughout this exploration, students are actively engaging with key plot points, notable characters, and significant themes. This process is not only fostering the development of their analytical skills but also encouraging them to identify various literary methods employed by Shakespeare and draw connections to the contextual influences shaping the play.
Questions:
- What is a ‘tempest’?
- What happened in the most recent extract you studied?
Year 9 – Romeo and Juliet
This term Year 9 are learning about 'Romeo and Juliet' and are reading the play in full thereby using their resilience and comprehension skills to decode challenging language. They are also continuing to build their analysis skills by exploding quotations including identifying methods and effects. They are also refining their written skills by practising analytical paragraphs.Questions:
- Why are the Capulet and Montague families fighting?
- Was Romeo always attracted to Juliet? What does this suggest about Romeo?
- Opportunity for additional research: The idea for Romeo and Juliet did not originate with William Shakespeare (although he is credited with producing the most famous version of the story). How old is this story? Where does it come from?
Year 10 – A Christmas Carol
Year 10 are currently reading A Christmas Carol which is the 19th century text they study at GCSE. They have been completing a 'cold read' of the novella to understand the plot, characterisation and key themes before they begin deeper analysis. Alongside this, year 10 are also revising their Language Paper 1 skills where they look at fictional extracts and analyse the writer's use of language and structural devices.Questions:
- What was the Poor Law? Was it ‘actually’ helpful?
- What did Dickens hope to change with the writing of this novella?
Year 11 – Unseen Poetry
This term, Year 11 have been learning about how to analyse and explore ‘unseen’ poetry in preparation for their exams. In previous units of study, students have had the opportunity to develop detailed skills in poetic analysis which they have begun applying to poems they have never seen before. In addition to this, we have begun exploring and comparing the poets’ use of varying methods and the effects these create.
- What is an extended metaphor?
- What is a semantic field?
- What is the best poem that you have studied so far this term? Why did you enjoy it?
