Summer reading information will be coming home in June but all families should have received a flyer about the book swap. Students are asked to bring in 2-5 gentle used books. At the book swap, our hope is to send all students home with 2 books. Please bring your book donations into the library by the end of May. Thank you!
Also please note that the last day for book check out will be Friday May 26th. All books are due back to the library no later than Friday June 2nd.
Thank you for all your support this year, we can't wait to see everyone back as 1st graders!

Music
Preschool students have enjoyed learning to sing along to lots of new songs this month, such as the “Cheetah Pride” song about Memorial School, “Monkey Stomps His Feet”, and “Charlie Over the Ocean”. We practiced our steady beat as we pretended to chop ingredients to make ice cream with the poem “Chop Chop Chippity Chop”. We also practiced using our singing voices and talking voices to greet one another!
Kindergarten students have finished learning about their musical comparison words: loud/soft, fast/slow, high/low, short/long, and smooth/bumpy. Now, students continue their work with vocal exploration through silly stories like “Cowboy Joe”, “The Ice Cream Sundae”, and “The Blue Cockatoo”. All of the students are also growing in their abilities to make a “perfect match” (match pitch) with another voice that is singing! We are also practicing music for the kindergarten show in music class! Students practice self-evaluation skills after singing each song to decide if they are performance-ready. Each class has a chart where we are tracking our progress!
Some classes have also tried “sound stories”, where I read a picture book to the class and students are assigned specific words When the student hears the word in the story, he or she plays the chosen instrument to demonstrate the word. We’ve had great fun with Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain by Verna Aardema and Max Found Two Sticks by Brian Pinkney.
I would like to thank you all for sharing your wonderful students with me this year! It has been a great privilege to watch their creativity, self-awareness and musical expression grow throughout the year. I look forward to continuing music class with all of your students next year and hope that you have a wonderful summer! Make some time to dance and sing while you are enjoying your time together this summer!

Art
For the past month, in the art room, students have been exploring COLOR! We have learned all about the PRIMARY colors, and that they are a very special color family; the only colors we can’t make, but when we mix them, they are MAGICAL and make every other color of the rainbow.
The students were also challenged when I told them we weren’t going to be using paintbrushes, but were going to paint with our FINGERS! We thought that was so fun, but the challenging part was trying to keep our paint clean. When we realized we had 10 fingers to use, we were able to mix and create beautiful colors for our very own rainbow paintings!
To finish our paintings, we added clouds with fluffy quilting stuffing and completed our paintings with gorgeous colorful sky backgrounds. We can’t wait to bring them home to show you!
