Cardinal Corner
Week of September 29, 2019
For Your Information:
PLC meetings: Upcoming PLC meetings and 48 Hour Challenges are now on the CS Staff Calendar. Invites were not sent for all of them as we have different people that want invited to different meetings. Please make sure you are checking the calendar for your PLC times as they do change. After today all of the 1st Quarters will be in the calendar.
Dismissal: Please have your dismissal numbers out and in front of you daily; it helps the process a lot so you can direct students. Please continue to redirect parents of our dismissal procedures. No one enjoys being the bad guy but if we are all on the same page it will eliminate problems.
Leave Requests: Incase you missed the email from HR Leave Requests have not moved to an electronic form. You can complete the form at www.olatheschools.org/humanresources. Here are the steps: 1. Notify principal. 2. Go to HR website and click on the form. 3. Complete the form and click submit. 4. You will receive an email after you submit and an email will be sent to me. I will forward the email to Kathy.
Parent/Teacher Conferences: If you want ELL, Special Education, Counselor, or administration to attend a conference please let them know about conferences as soon as possible. My schedule is on my door; please put the child's name. Please help me by putting grade and teacher name behind the child's name. Example: Student A (5W).
P/T Conferences: Please remember that we are not sharing reading levels with parents; we are sharing reading behaviors. What are they are able to do? What are skills that you are currently working on in reading group?
Ethics Training: All staff members are responsible for ethics and social media training. This was shared at preservice and in an email. Please take care of this sometime this week. The office staff will have the sheet that needs to be signed, incase you still need to sign. Documents are in teams if you need to review them. (CS Staff - General- Back to school - 2019 - Code of Ethics and Social Media)

Fountas and Pinnell: This is only our 2nd time giving F & P and we are all still learning. During an upcoming PLC we will be discussing our scoring to make sure we are scoring the same throughout our building. We will also be doing some work with the Learning Continuum. Each grade level will get an email so you can be prepared for the PLC.
Spelling Bee 3rd - 5th Grade : We have a building spelling bee each year. Cyndi Hail has done it in the past and will continue to do it but would like someone to join her in organizing the event. If you are interested please let both of us know.

Math Minute
From the article in AIM: Resisting the Urge to Reteach for Mastery: Reality is that when most students are wrestling with new concepts, their work isn’t stellar. Use Exit Tickets to take a class temperature: How are my students doing? This should only take a few minutes. There is a different between finding success and full mastery. Your students are growing and often need more practice and experience with the concept, rather than to be retaught.
As you become familiar with Eureka Math please continue to reach out to Kasandra. Do you need help with a manipulative? Do you need help understanding a new concept?
Staff Shout Outs:
The Elementary Principals loved visiting our building! While walking around they had great feedback on things they saw and felt in our building.
- Everyone felt welcomed! The "feel" of the building was inviting, warm, and caring.
- Staff was actively monitoring students (teachers moving around the room while teaching, moving around the room while students completed tasks, etc.)
- Teachers redirected behaviors by giving positive praise to others or in a warm, caring approach.
- Rotations to specials were quick and organized. Directions were given and then students were quickly involved in the lesson and active.
- Many classrooms had anchor charts and/or authentic student work
- Evident that hallway expectations have been taught and reviewed.
When walking we always try to create some reflection questions also. Please remember that we are in rooms for a short amount of time and do not see everything that has occurred.
- When working in partners/groups are all students contributing? Have expectations been shared with students so all are participating?
Again, everyone loved visiting our school! They had a chance to see so many great things. I hope you feel proud of all of your hard work!
Congrats to Mrs. Kettler, CS nomination for Teacher of the Year and Mrs. Miller, CS nomination for ESU Master Teacher! Congrats to both! Both will be recognized at banquet on March 3, 2020.
