Notes from the School Nurse
Hello Parents/Guardians!
As we are now into cold/flu season and also still dealing with COVID-19, this note serves as a gentle reminder regarding a few things related to student health.
WHEN TO KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME FROM SCHOOL
1. Sick children need to be kept home from school; to include excessive coughing, sore throat, runny nose/congestion, vomiting, and/or high body temperatures (fever). Resting at home will help them get better more quickly and will prevent them from exposing other children or the staff to their illness.

Attendance
Please note, we have implemented a Google form for submission of absences/late arrivals and notes. This form is the only acceptable method of communication and must be utilized for reporting absences/late arrivals and uploading doctor/medical notes ONLY for your student(s). With the exception of COVID reporting in which an email in addition to the absence form must be sent to Nurse Ann (sally.warf@pgcps.org), Dr. Fryson (tfryson@cmitelementary.org) and Mrs. Virgil (evirgil@cmitelementary.org). ABSENT NOTE SUBMISSION: Please complete this form within three (3) days once your child returns to instruction. Our school wide STEM Fair was held on February 11th. We had an amazing time. Shout out to all of our winners.

Valentine's day Brag Tags were delivered!
Happy Valentine’s Day, Tiger Family!! Valentine Gram Brag Tags were delivered on Valentine's Day. All scholars received a Valentine Gram from the PTO on a cable ring like pictured above. Scholars may have also received additional grams from friends. Please see the instructions above on how to attach them to the cable ring. It's almost time for another amazing fundraiser, our Double Good popcorn sale! This year the event will run from Tuesday, March 14th - Saturday, March 18th. Please note, if you have more than one child both of them will use the SAME fundraising page for this. Below are the step-by-step instructions. Hello Kindergarten Families,
Please check the weather daily, so your scholar is dressed appropriately for outdoor recess. Please make sure that you are reading any messages via dojo, class story, or emails pertaining to your scholar’s class.
Homework is posted by the end of the day on Fridays, for the upcoming week. Please make sure that your scholar is completing their homework assignments, they are graded on completion weekly. If your scholar is in enrichment, please provide your scholar with a homework journal daily, so they can work on the assignments in enrichment.
Reminder
No school on Monday, February 20, 2023 (President’s Day)
2 hour delayed opening of school on Tuesday, February 21, 2023.
If you signed your scholar up for clubs, their afternoon dismissal is for them to be in holding with the enrichment scholars. Please remember the days that your scholar is in a club, if they are usually a car or van rider, they will not be at their regular scheduled dismissal area. If for some reason, they are not to go to their club that day, please notify your scholar’s teacher ahead of time, so they can be at the correct dismissal location.
ELA: We will work on listening actively and ask questions to understand information and answer questions using multi word responses. We will work on identifying common sounds that letter represents. We will review “bosey e” in our workbook, and use letter-sounds relationships to decode, including VC,CVC, CVCC words.
Math: We will be starting Topic 11 in math next week, learning how to count by one’s and ten’s up to 100.
Science: We will be discussing living vs non-living things.
Social Studies: We will discuss being safe in our neighborhood.
Health: We are reviewing communication, the proper way to communicate with one another, using our words to express ourselves.and continue demonstrating attentive listening.
Friendly reminder: Class dojo is one of our main forms of communication for any classroom activities, events, and messages. Please make sure that you are connected to your scholar’s Class dojo. Teacher emails and the communication folder are other ways to stay connected as well.

Please provide a nut free snack for your scholar daily.
Your scholar should have a full set of extra change of clothes (uniform) that can be kept in their cubbies.
Please label all of your scholar’s items, sweaters, jackets, water bottles, lunch bags.
If your scholar’s form of transportation changes for dismissal, please complete the necessary forms and upload into the document, as well as notify your scholar’s teacher.

Additionally, please ensure that your child is dressed warmly when they arrive to school in the mornings. We have outdoor recess at 10:20 a.m. if the temperature is at or above 32 degrees. It is important that students are dressed appropriately for the weather.

This week in Reading, we will be working on Unit 3 Week 3. Throughout week 3, we will continue to focus on traditional tales. We will be reading and comparing two versions of Cinderella - Interstellar Cinderella and Cendrillon: An Island Cinderella. We will be taking our weekly reading test. This will test our knowledge on this week's vocabulary words (stranded, mechanic, blossoms, expensive, and forgave), words with r-controlled vowels, and reading comprehension. Our weekly spelling patterns will be r-controlled vowels - er, ir, ur.
In Math, we will continue up Topic 8. This topic is all about money and telling time to five minutes. Please feel free to work on these skills at home. Online clock tool: https://toytheater.com/clock/
In Science, we will be talking about the surface of Earth changes and what causes those changes to happen.
In Social Studies, we will continue learning about different community leaders.
We are in need of tissues. With the cold and flu season in full affect, we are going through our supplies fairly quickly.
Please ensure scholars are coming to school dressed for the winter weather. We have recess at
10:50 a.m. and will be going outside if the temperature is above 32 degrees.

Terrific Third Graders
In Reading this week, we will read and compare two historical fiction texts. The first text is from Little House on the Prairie and the second text is By the Shores of Silver Lake. Students will work on the skill suffixes using -ful, -y, and -ness
In Social Studies, we will begin Chapter 3: Lesson 3 Early Spanish Communities.
In Math, we are reviewing for our Topic 9 assessment. Scholars have been given their extra credit assignment, which is a great review for their test. Then we'll get started on Topic 10, which involves fluently multiplying by 10s.
This week in Science, we are looking at wet and dry climates around the world. Then using maps students will predict where these climates would be.

We strongly encourage parents to check SchoolMax weekly to stay abreast of your scholar's progress in all academic areas. Students can redo eligible assignments within a week of being posted. Weekly check-ins with your scholar about his/her grades is a great way to set goals and reflect on progress.
We are in need of hand sanitizers, disinfecting wipes, and facial tissues. The cold and flu season is upon us and we would like to continue to keep our classrooms germ free.

Good day Tigers! This week we wrapped up the poster project for Black History Month and the activists in Black Resistance. Scholars created a poster that represented a historical figure who empowered our society and expressed resistance to social injustices! It has been a joy to see how scholars created their poster expressions and what they have learned about their chosen activist! Way to go!
Black History Wax Museum Essays and Poster Creations
Next week, we will migrate into completing the essay for scholars chosen STEM Black History figure. Students are required to complete a five paragraph essay with a poster that represents their person. They were given planners (graphic organizers) to complete for organization. Students are expected to have their essay and poster completed on February 24, 2023. This is worth three grades (essay, presentation, speech). Please ensure your scholar completes the required assignments in order for them to be successful. Great job Tigers! Let's Go!
The wax museum will be on February 28, 2023 and they are expected to dress as their STEM Historical figure! How exciting!
5th Grade Subjects:
Math
In Math this week, students will use models, equations, and previously learned strategies to add and subtract fractions, divide fractions and make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
Science
We will continue to explore human impacts on Earth’s systems in science.
RELA
This week in RELA, we are continuing U3W2 focusing on Realistic Fiction, analyzing plot elements, summarizing. We will contInue to finish up U3W2 and complete our progress checks. In Writing, we are focusing on suffixes -ize, -ance, -ence, -ist; pronouns and antecedents. We have begun to work on our Black History Month Research Essays! Way to go scholars!
Social Studies
We are continuing Chapter 7 and working on reviewing for our Assessment. Next week, we will assess Chapter 7 and migrate into Chapter 8 which discusses Westward Expansion! Way to go scholars!

Greetings,
Tigers have presentations this week and next. Classes will primarily consist of independent work to finish their projects and critiques. Projects include portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, abstract, and other activities that develop their understanding of depth of field and value. We will continue to stress craftsmanship as a priority.
Music
Students are learning about and comparing Black musicians for BHM, and discussing the legacy they’ve left on western music. We are diving into musicians we already know and love, and enjoying the music from older artists we’ve never seen before, too!
Technology
K-2 practiced:

Students learn what computers are, the basic types and parts
of a computer and a few examples of the many amazing things we can do with computers.
3-5 practiced:
Tynker-All About Computers II
In this course, students familiarize themselves with computing concepts as they watch entertaining and educational videos about how computers are used, how the Internet works, data collection and visualization, cybersecurity, the history of computing, and more.
PE
This week, students will continue to work on our jump roping skills. Please continue to send your scholar to school in sneakers on PE days, thank you!
