Sarah Wellmeier - Geocities and Coding
Sarah's WIN group participated in creating, coding, critical thinking, and team communication and collaboration as they created buildings in their geocity. Each child was challenged to design a 3-D building for the city using geometric shapes they had been discussing in their math classes. Students created and named their building. When all buildings were completed, the students assembled the city. Students were placed on teams and given directions on coding the DASH robot. Each team selected a riddle to solve, then programed the DASH robot to move to the building that answered their riddle. Teams discussed strategies for better success with the riddles and the coding. Eventually, all teams were able to solve the riddles and code the DASH to move to the correct building.
Ann Wilder - Tangrams
Getting their critical thinking in gear, Ann's class listened to their peers read Grandfather Tang and learned how 7 tangram pieces can be arranged to form many different animals and shapes. After the story, students used their sets of tangrams to create pre-designed shapes. Many students found this right-brained activity very frustrating. Determination and critical thinking were needed to solve the shapes and move on to the next level of design. Productive struggle builds future-ready skills!
Are you challenging your class to think critically and build problem solving stamina?
Chelsea Mayer - In Search of Germs
With petri dishes and swabs in hand, Chelsea's students went in search of the most germ infested places in the school. The principal's phone, the boys' bathroom toilet seat, the toilet flush handle, a ukulele, and a library book were a few of the suspect places. Students gathered samples and will investigate after a few days to see germ growth.
Where is your most germ infested area?
Allison King - Pillow Case Sewing Projects
Allison hit a fabric gold mine by finding material at the Thrift Store at a very reduced price. Each student in her class was able to design and sew their very own pillow case. Future-ready skills were exercised as students collaboratively helped each other with the planning, pinning, and sewing.
Need Some Summer Reading?
Check out A.J. Juliani's 100 Books Every Teacher Should Read blog post. He lists books in these categories:
May - Mental Health Awareness
Don Wettrick has asked me to share this podcast with you, our MSD of MV staff. It's a sad story, but an important message.
"Jason Reid is on a mission to end teen suicide. Obviously this is a big goal, but Jason doesn't want other families to know the pain of losing a child.
This podcast is about his journey, and Ryan's story. Their foundation- chooselife.org is determined to reach every parent and every family about the conversation they need to be having with their kids. They are also producing a documentary film that will drive more conversations and open up a much needed dialogue."
