August 10, 2022
Course Migration from itslearning to Canvas
Read-only access to itslearning will be available through August 31, 2022. Access to files exported from itslearning will be available through September 30, 2022. See June 15, 2022 Shifting to Canvas Newsletter for information concerning migration of content from itslearning to Canvas.
Canvas Course Home Page
To maintain consistency in navigation among HCPS courses, each student-facing Canvas course in HCPS will reflect a common template. Teachers will have the option to exchange the banner for one of their own design, add text or links to the body of the page, and add buttons in addition to the required three found on the template. To maintain the proper size for both the banners and buttons, templates are found in Canva. Design options will be reviewed in the August back-to-school Canvas session facilitated in each school.
HELP!
Canvas provides a support chat and a support number for all HCPS employees. This is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to support any problems teachers may encounter as well as support in creation in the platform. In the global navigation menu, select HELP and navigate to Chat with Canvas Support and Canvas Support Hotline.
Anticipated Canvas Timeline
- August 10: 2022-2023 Courses Begin to Populate in Canvas
- Recommended Practice: Do not begin to populate 2022-2023 courses with content until after receiving pushed curriculum.
- August 16-19: Curriculum Begins to Populate 2022-2023 Canvas Courses
- Recommended Practice: - Use the “star” feature to favorite your 2022-2023 courses. Navigate to All Courses (Courses > All Courses) and follow the steps to Customize My Courses List As An Instructor. Remove the “star” from 2021-2022 shell courses.
- Navigate to Modules and then to the Curriculum and Course Overview to find the curriculum overview for your course.
- Begin modifying your courses and adding content only after curriculum populates and you have crosslisted your courses (if appropriate).
- August 29: Course Names Visible to Students
- Students will not have full access to participate in the course until September 6, 2022. If the teacher publishes the course before September 6, 2022, students will have read-only access.

- Each school participates in a professional development session focusing on Getting Started in Canvas. The three-hour in-person session will include design features, finding your curriculum, structuring modules, collaboration, and tips for getting started in Canvas.
- August 31: itslearning Access Closes
- Recommended Practice: Use the export files, available through September 30, 2022, to migrate your itslearning course into Canvas. If you need to migrate manually from itslearning, access to itslearning will close on August 31, 2022. Complete ALL manual migration by August 30, 2022.
- August 31: 2021-2022 Shell Courses Transition to Read-Only View.
- Recommended Practice: Use the “star” feature to favorite your 2022-2023 courses. Navigate to All Courses (Courses > All Courses) and follow the steps to Customize My Courses List As An Instructor. Remove the “star” from 2021-2022 shell courses.
- September 6: Teacher Publishes Course and Content for Student Access
- Recommended Practice: In addition to publishing the course, be sure to publish module headers and individual content in modules.
Cross-listing
Similar to course merge in itslearning, cross-listing allows you to move section enrollments from individual courses and combine them into one course. This feature is helpful for instructors who teach several sections of the same course and only want to manage course data in one location. Follow the steps in How do I cross-list a section in a course as an instructor to cross-list. Be sure curriculum has been added to your course (August 16-19) prior to cross-listing. De-cross-listing is complex so only cross-list when you are certain that you want your courses merged.
Import Content - Using Direct Share
If you have content already built or imported from the itslearning file in a previous Canvas course or in a Sandbox, you can copy it to the new 2022-2023 course using Direct Share.
- Open previous course
- Locate the item to be shared
- Select …
- Select “Copy to…”
- Select the course you want it to go to
- Tip: Copy specific items or an entire module!
