The latest buzz...September 24, 2021
A note from Mrs. Stewart
The first weeks of school have flown by and have gone very well! Our total student count this year in the building is 410! That's a huge increase from our 289 last school year. It is feeling like we are one step closer to the proverbial "normal" that we hear so much about. I'd like to thank all our families for all you've done to help us kick this school year off on a positive note!
After this edition of the OE News, families can expect to receive the OE News on a monthly basis. Occasionally, email blasts with important announcements, reminders, etc. will come as appropriate, but the official newsletter will come on the final Friday of each month.

Oakwood Parent News and Updates
Important Information and Event Information
When Students are Sick ~ Please keep your child home when he/she is sick and report absences according to our attendance policies. Promptly pick your child(ren) up or arrange for pick up from school if signs or symptoms of illness are present. Please keep your child home until he/she has been symptom-free for 24 hours without medication. Please be sure to call our office if your child tests positive for COVID-19. You will be asked to follow Oakland County Health Department guidelines until it is safe for your child to return to school.
Homecoming ~ Each year our community celebrates Brandon Homecoming together. At the elementary level, we have a HOCO spirit week and we also usually participate in the parade in downtown Ortonville. This year we are looking for a family who may have a trailer that we could use as a hay wagon in the parade. If you have a trailer, some hay, and a way to pull the trailer, contact your child's teacher or Mrs. Stewart in the OES office. The parade will be October 8th starting at 5:30 p.m.
HOCO Spirit Week ~ Here is the schedule for our OES spirit week during the week of Homecoming! The more participation we have the more fun it is!
NWEA testing ~ Students are involved in NWEA testing right now through October 22. This is a computer adaptive assessment that we give at least twice a year to monitor student academic achievement and student growth. You will receive a parent report that lets you see how your child performed on that test.
Booster Group Meeting ~ JOIN OUR PARENT GROUP! This coming Monday, September 27 will be our first Booster meeting of the year. This meeting will be a Zoom meeting to get things started. The meeting will be from 4:30-5:30 and you can find the Zoom link below in the upcoming events listing.
Specials at Oakwood ~ This year our students will have Art, Music and P.E. one time per week as they usually do. In addition to the old favorites, we have added a new special, Young Innovators or YI. Mr. Larson will teach YI to all classes grades JK-5. You can learn a little more about YI a little further down as you scroll through this edition of our school news.
Medications ~ You might not think of cough drops and sunscreen as medication, but at school, we have to have an over-the-counter medication form completed and those items kept in the office to disperse to kids. Children cannot bring cough drops, antacids such as Tums, sunscreen, etc. to school with them. If you have a need for any of those items or other medications like cold/cough syrups, pain relievers, etc. to be available for your child at school, call the front office and we can set you up with the proper form to complete. After the form is completed an adult can drop the medication in it's original container along with the form in the front office.
Arrival and Dismissal
Arrival procedures ~ When arriving after 8:45 a.m. you'll notice our staff is no longer in the drop off loop. If you arrive and notice that the adults are heading back into the building or are not there at all, no worries, just continue around to the front bus loop and pull up to the front door. Mr. Rodney, our security officer will greet them and let them in the front door. Please be advised that school starts at 8:45 and arriving closer to 8:35 will help your children get to their classroom on time.
Continuous motion parent loop ~ In order to try and reduce the number of cars in the pick up loop during dismissal, we have made some changes by moving our JK and K students and their siblings to the gym to be picked up at the end of the day. We are also working on some further organizational structures with the 1st - 5th grade students in the loop and will let you know if any further changes are needed.
Specials Classes at OES
Highlighting our new special this year, Young Innovators or YI, here is some news From Mr. Larson...
Young Innovators, or “YI,” is a new special for the 21/22 school year for all elementary students in Brandon. Students are learning about how scientists and engineers approach tough problems, propose solutions, and design models that showcase their thinking. YI is structured to give all students a rich experience that blends hands-on learning, research, and using technology creatively. Learning targets grade-level science topics in engaging ways. Some examples students will work on this Fall include using computer coding to create an instrument to learn about sound waves, building homes for pollinators to explore plants, and modeling the motion of planets using robots to build an understanding of gravity.
Oakwood Positive Behavior Initiatives
Social Emotional Learning Corner
Positivity Project ~ Oakwood Elementary is a Positivity Project partner school. Every student in every class learns about the same character traits, at their own level. Click here to see which traits we learn about all year long. This month, students learned about Curiosity and Teamwork.
Bullying Prevention ~ This year we are focusing on Bullying Prevention at Oakwood Elementary. We will be using PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center’s resources in order to teach our students about what bullying is and how to prevent it from happening. Each month a new topic will be discussed with third through fifth grade classrooms. This month’s topic will be Bullying 101 - What is Bullying. Attached to this email is a quick guide for parents on what is bullying and how to approach bullying situations at home!
Unity Day ~ Look for information to come home soon regarding Unity Day, October 20. We will all wear orange on Unity Day to show our whole school commitment to show kindness and speak up against bullying.

Meet our staff ~ We are so excited to have an amazing team of mental health professionals on staff this year in a variety of capacities. Our two school Psychologists, Caitlin Tallon and Amanda Miller will each spend one day a week at Oakwood. During that time, they will work with individual kids, teach class lessons and work with our instructional staff on academic and behavior interventions. Miriam Elson will return as our two day per week Social Worker, working with some of our students. A new addition to our team is Sarah Deo, she is our full-time Social Worker and will be an integral part of all that we do with Social Emotional Learning (SEL), behavior planning, counseling, bullying prevention, etc.
