About Sikh Heritage Month
Sikh Heritage Month was first celebrated in BC in 2018. Its purpose is to celebrate the contributions and aspirations of all Sikh-Canadians and develop a greater understanding and appreciation of a rich, unique, and diverse heritage. Sikhs have been in BC for over 100 years, and this is an opportunity to showcase their contribution to the economic, social, and cultural fabric of the province. This initiative is meant to help create awareness and appreciation for Sikhi in Canada. On April 30, 2019, the Sikh Heritage Month Act was formally recognized by the Government of Canada. This means that throughout Canada, in each and every year, April is to be known as “Sikh Heritage Month.”
For more information about the organization and past years, please visit shmbc.ca. You can find SHMBC on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook as well.

JOHN E. BETTS "BEAT YESTERDAY" SCHOLARSHIP
Those of us who have the privilege of working at McDonald’s know that at the end of the day, it’s all about people. Not only the guests who visit us, but the people you spend your shifts with and work with side by side. When I first started out as a McDonald’s Crew Member, everyone on our team came from different walks of life, but McDonald’s was the common thread that connected all of us. These people were my managers, colleagues and my friends – and it’s because of the people, that I spent 50 years working at McDonald’s.
Throughout my career, my favourite thing to do was connect with the restaurant teams. Your stories inspired me, and what never failed to surprise me, was how hard you all worked – not only for McDonald’s, but on the work you put in to pursue your personal passions as well. Whether it was your own dreams, or helping your kids with theirs, I was constantly amazed by the drive of the incredible people across the system, always looking to achieve more.
Giving back to communities and employees has always been important to me. It is with that spirit, I established a Scholarship Fund to assist our Restaurant Team members and their dependents with post-secondary education. I’m calling it the John E. Betts ‘Beat Yesterday’ Scholarship Fund, and ten $2,500 scholarships will be available each year.
Beating Yesterday is a concept that I’ve focused on throughout my career. It’s about raising the bar on your ambitions, and results -- about figuring out how to aim higher, get there, and then keep going. It’s a concept that applies to our business and your everyday life.
Thank you - for all you do for the McDonald’s brand each and every day!
John E. Betts
Who can apply:
- Any Restaurant employee and their dependents can apply. Applicants can range from Grade 12 up to those in their fourth-year of post-secondary school.
What you need to apply:
- Your Restaurant Number (If you are a dependent of a McDonald’s employee, please provide the employee name and Restaurant Number)
- How long you have worked at McDonald’s
- A description about you
- A summary of what your experience at McDonald’s has taught you
- A short video (two minutes max.) to describe how you are beating yesterday on the job, at school, or in your community
- A reference letter from a manager or teacher
UPDATE: The John E. Betts ‘ Beat Yesterday’ Scholarship is now offering ten $2,500 scholarships for the 2023 school year.
Deadline to apply: January 15th 2023
Scholarship recipients will be selected by February 15th, 2023

Over the last 21 years, Diabetes Hope Foundation has been successful in engaging more youth from across the country through the expansion and growth of the Scholarship program across Canada.

JAY NIJHOLT SCHOLARSHIP
What They're Looking For
- Sports: Soccer
- Citizenship: Canadian
- Activities (Not Required): Entrepreneurship
- Financial Need (Not Required)
This scholarship is in honor of our friend, teammate and family member William (Jay) Nijholt.
Jay was passionate about soccer and being an entrepreneur and we wanted this scholarship to reflect that. He had played soccer since he was 4 years old, and was always very involved in the soccer community, playing for multiple teams each year.
His business, Pavilion Fire Protection, provided fire protection services throughout the Okanagan region (BC) and beyond designing and installing fire suppression systems in buildings of all sizes.
Jay was taken from us suddenly this year, but we would love for his legacy to live on, and to give someone in the soccer community a leg up in achieving their dreams through education. We are looking for someone who is resilient in the face of adversity, has an entrepreneurial spirit, and a solid educational plan.
We are also sensitive to someone that may have been touched by mental illness, either themselves or with someone close to them. Mental illness awareness is important to all of us putting this together including Jay's family.
Jay's obituary (2022):
It is with complete and utter sadness that we regretfully announce the sudden passing of Jay Nijholt on September 2, 2022. Jay was a funny, ambitious and charismatic friend to all. He always filled the room with his signature laugh. He is survived by his mother, Sherry, his father, Frits, his sister, Tamara (Shane), his brother, Cory (Brittany), his niece, Nevaeh, and his world and stars, his fiancée, Nadine. There are also countless aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, team mates and coworkers who share in this tragic loss. Jay had a zest for life that few could match. He loved snowboarding, concerts, and beach volleyball, but soccer was his passion. It was this passion that brought him and Nadine together. Jay was a perfectionist in his trade and was a true professional. He took immense pride in his work, and took great care of his employees. All who knew him were truly blessed. Today, take the time to reach out to those you love, and tell them how much they mean to you. Not one of us is guaranteed tomorrow, so be sure to live for today. We know Jay always did.
HOW TO APPLY? through Scholartree.ca

We want to grant this scholarship to a deserving grade 12 student who exemplifies these qualities and has demonstrated their commitment to success. The recipient of this scholarship will be someone who has a financial need, but will also be someone who has demonstrated personal growth, leadership, and contribution, despite the challenges they face. RESOURCES
IN THE NEWS
"in addition to navigating the world after more than two years of the pandemic, Mulellari said young people also have to navigate the challenging economy. Many students are "chasing higher-paying jobs" to account for inflationary costs while coping with financial anxiety."
"All of this means we need new ways of thinking about work. We need to flip the script and give young people ways to visualize their complex, dynamic and squiggly careers before they leave school. The OECD recently showed that around half of all teenagers are still aspiring to around 1% of all jobs. These are jobs that have been around for centuries of even longer (the first teachers, dentists and engineers worked millennia ago). Young people aspire to the visible jobs, the ones they already know about; it's much harder to aspire to something you've never heard of."
