A Message From Mrs. O'Shaughnessy
Happy First Day of Spring! On Monday, March 20th, it is officially Spring. I chose the beautiful Cherry Blossoms as our backdrop for this weeks newsletter, as they are already starting to bloom! Our daffodils are already out as well in the front of the buidling.
This past week at PS 88Q, we had a lot going on! On the three year anniversary of the pandemic, and that memorable March 13, 2020, when our students exited the school, not knowing that they would not enter until September 2020, or September 2021 again, we felt it necessary to fully return to what we know, together is better. From Pep Rally's to class spirit, to college readiness, basketball games, class trips, and STEM night, our school community showed up! We have so much more planned. These next three months will fly by. I truly feel that schools are magical places, because each school can create an environment and community that, for that period in time, provides a child with a lifetime excitement for learning. Learning comes in many forms. Teams, experiences, class trips, hands on activities, making friends, and being part of a nurturing classroom are just a few ways. As a principal, watching students run into school is the best data I can see. The excitement of what the school day will bring is everything. For this, I thank our staff. Just to name a few of the extra opportunities our students have, because of them:
- Morning Extracurriculars: Beautiful Me with Ms. Prinzevallii; Basketball with Mr. Tripotseris and Mr. Noland; Compensatory Services with our SE teachers, morning drop off with our amazing school aides
- Afternoon Extracurriculars: Band with Mr. Dumont, Cooking with Ms. Kuqi and Ms. Melecio, Chorus with Mr. Alboum, Coding with Mr. Nolan and Ms. Marano, Support with Ms. Gizzo, Theater and Dance with Ms. Bawer and Ms. Fogarty, and Compensatory Services.
Have a wonderful week! Don't forget to come back Thursday night for a cumulative performance of all our student artists! Dance, Theater, Chorus and Band!
Happy Retirement Dr. Chan.
Our beloved Superintendent, Dr. Madelene Chan, has officially retired. Please see her farewell.

Dear District 24 Staff, Students, Parents and Guardians,
I hope this letter finds everyone well!
This message is a difficult one to write. After 14 years as the proud Community Superintendent of District 24 I will be retiring on Friday, March 17, 2023. Unfortunately, my mother is in need of care, and I have made the decision to assist her during her recuperation period.
I have loved working in District 24! It has been the opportunity of a lifetime and I will miss everyone deeply.
I know that the District will thrive with its amazing District team and incredible individuals who care for students.
Please stay well and be kind to one another.
District 24 is unique, and I am confident that you will continue to shine.
Thank you for all of the wonderful memories!
I look forward to hearing about your continued success!
With respect and gratitude,
Madelene Chan
Community Superintendent
District 24
Ramadan Begins March 22
Ramadan is a holy month of fasting, introspection and prayer for Muslims, the followers of Islam. It is celebrated as the month during which Muhammad received the initial revelations of the Quran, the holy book for Muslims. Fasting is one of the five fundamental principles of Islam. Each day during Ramadan, Muslims do not eat or drink from dawn to sunset. They are also supposed to avoid impure thoughts and bad behavior.
Muslims break their daily fasts by sharing meals with family and friends, and the end of Ramadan is celebrated with a three-day festival known as Eid al-Fitr, one of Islam’s major holidays. Ramadan always falls on the ninth month of the 12-month Islamic calendar. Ramadan 2023 starts on the evening of Wednesday, March 22 and lasts 30 days, ending at sundown on Thursday, April 20.
