Up for Debate
Mrs. Johnson’s Economics class tackled a tough topic this week – “Should the U.S. government cut (post-Covid) unemployment benefits?” Using a debate forum, students made their case using prepared arguments, claims and rebuttals based on their earlier research. Mrs. Johnson commented, “Watching the students take control of the debate was very interesting. You could see the passion in certain students when they asserted their opinion.” Senior Olivia Colon said, “It was challenging trying to defend something you may not really believe in or agree with, but it was fun to improv and say what came to mind at the right time." On the opposing side of the debate, senior Josie Valdez enjoyed “working as part of a team and arguing for something they worked to research and were passionate about.” This debate was part of their study of unemployment rates and GDP.
Market Day
Over the last several weeks, third-grade students have been studying economics. They learned about goods and services, consumers, and factors that influence consumers’ decisions as well as personal saving and spending. Upper school students in Coach Beer’s Marketing and Business class provided third graders with valuable knowledge about running a business (Java Dawgs) and gave advice on how to make a profit while fulfilling consumer demand.
As a culminating activity, third grade hosted the First Annual Market Day. This event served as a practical application for all the skills and concepts the students have learned in this unit. Students set up a "store" with each "store" providing a good or service for his/her classmates, other GWA students, and staff members to purchase using special “dawg dollars.” Mrs. Padgett said, "We are incredibly proud of the work done by our third graders." They have gained important real-world knowledge and a first-hand look at entrepreneurship and business operations. Awesome job, third grade!
Last Saturday we hosted our 2023 Lucky Dawg Gala & Benefit Auction at The Factory at Walton Mill in Downtown Monroe — and what an evening it was! Thank you to the hundreds of the George Walton community members who either attended the event or participated from afar via our Silent Auction or 4-Trip Raffle. It was a remarkable evening of support and celebration of our school.
Bible Bulldogs
Thank you to Jessica Beer for sharing her message with our students during their weekly Bible Bulldogs meeting. She discussed five commonly used sayings and gave alternative options that glorify God. For example, instead of “follow your heart” – students could change the focus to following God and having Him lead their hearts. Bible Bulldogs is an optional student club that meets on Mondays during high school lunch for fellowship, bible study and devotionals.
Mark Your Calendar!
The GWA College Counseling Office is hosting a College Admissions Panel Event on Thursday, April 13, at 6:30 pm in the Nicholson Center. Several (6-8) college and university admission representatives from large, small, private, public, in-state & out-of-state schools will be participating. George Walton Academy students and families will not only learn about these respected institutions but also about the college admissions process in general. There will be time for Q & A as well. The College Admissions Panel Event is required for all sophomores. Freshmen, juniors, and high school parents are highly encouraged to attend. Please email lnabors@gwa.com or jterrell@gwa.com with any questions.
