Central Elementary's Monthly Newsletter: January Edition
From the Principal's Desk
I'll start things off with a thank you to all Central families for how welcoming you've been. Being new to a district as a student or adult offers many exciting challenges and a little bit of anxiety, but the Linden community is everything that I've been told and you've helped make Central feel like home for me. So thank you again for everything you do to make your students successful, for the building and for our staff. I hope you enjoy this month's peek into the goings on here.
Meet our Newest Office Staff Scarlett Oden
"I'm a mom of five great kids and happily married to my husband who proudly served his country. I relocated to MI four years ago from sunny California. I love being outside in the summer and exploring the beauty of Michigan. I hibernate in the winter. I'm very excited to be part of the Eagles staff family."
Please make sure to give her a warm welcome when you come into the building. Also remember that while you get to know her better, she is also learning about your students and who you all are and that will take some time. Please make sure that if you are dropping your student off in the morning after 8:20am that you come in with your student and sign them in. If you are picking your student up before the end of the day, please have your ID with you so she can verify names and faces to and be extra cautious with the safety of your student.
Peeking into 4th Grade!
Duguid’s Class: The students started the year with a passion for reading and writing! We built on their writing skills transitioning from focusing on complete sentences to writing well developed paragraphs. The students are enjoying reading about Pioneer Life, and comparing how their life is alike/different. Currently, the students are reading Sarah, Plain and Tall. The students love reading independently on Epic or from one of their library books. We visit the library 2-3 times a month, and students can also check out books online using Destiny. The students are learning a lot of mapping skills doing our Daily Geography.
Bowles class: This year has been off to a great start with a lot of learning in math and science. In math we started the year off with place value/adding and subtracting multi digit numbers. We just wrapped up our unit on multiplication/division, multiples and factors. We are starting chapter three which is over fractions. For science we have been working hard on our Energy unit: Blackouts in Ergstown. The students have been enjoying learning about energy. Last week they made their own wind mills and tested them, then they were able to re-design them and re-test them to make them work more efficiently. The students have been enjoying the Amplify program and all of its tools. The students really like the simulation lab on their computers where they get to simulate real energy systems.
5th Grade Peek in!
Mrs. Perkins’ ELA students are using the writing process to write their own personal narratives. The steps in the writing process are planning, writing, revising, rewriting, and editing. The writers in class have been sharing their draft pieces with each other to help one another become a better writer. Mrs. Perkins has been teaching her students how to revise and rewrite the sentences that make up their personal narrative. Her students are learning how to become stronger writers through the strategies she teaches. The next writing unit will be research. Each student will write a research paper about an explorer.
In social studies, students are studying explorers and exploration of the New World (Americas). We just finished learning about Africa, its people, and their interesting culture.
In reading class, students read a realistic fiction book. They completed a book project focusing on characters, setting, summarizing, and writing a recommendation of the book to a person of their choice. Mrs. Perkins’ students will be reading a fantasy book for their next reading project. Each project is different and focuses on different state standards. Reading a variety of different genre books is important.
In math we have been learning long division. We have begun to divide 3 and 4 digit dividends by 2 digit divisors. We also continue to work on problem solving skills weekly as well as mental math skills. Later this week we will begin work on the order of operations...PEMDAS.
In science we are just finishing a unit on Earth and Space science. We have used several modalities to uncover this unit question: "Why do we see different stars at different times of the year?" To discover this answer we have created several different models of the Earth, space, and the constellations we can observe. We have also read resource books to uncover this answer as well as using our Chromebooks to study a simulation created by Amplify science. Next we will begin to look at a unit on Matter...Modeling Matter.
Before going out on Thanksgiving break Mr. Sinn's class had a "Flannel Day" for the homeroom students. We all wore our flannel clothing and brought in comfort snacks to enjoy for the day. We had a lot of fun this day working on Thanksgiving themed activities in math and science while being comfy in our flannel clothing!!
