Goochland Reads Program Continues
We hope you are enjoying reading the Heartwood Hotel: A True Home for our Goochland Reads program! Since we do not have assigned readings on the weekends, it is a good time to catch up on any missed chapters (or to get ahead if needed). Students are asked trivia questions each day about the previous night's reading.

Middle School Curriculum Fair for 5th Grade Students
The middle school curriculum fair took place last Thursday for rising 6th graders. If you missed it, then you can still read much of the information in the attached slideshow.
Ned's Mindset Assembly
Hello Byrd Families!
As you know, we recently hosted an all school event called NED’s Mindset Mission. We trust your student was encouraged by the show which taught about having a positive Mindset for learning and life! Mindset Mission yoyos are still available for purchase to support the free show and message until January 31st. Please bring in a purchase form linked here and cash or check made out to Byrd Elementary School if your student is still interested in purchasing a yoyo. If your student has already purchased a yoyo, here is an important link to help them get off to a good start with proper string length adjustment, click here.
Additionally, here are a couple of our favorite follow up home resources from the Mindset Mission website. You may want to use these with your child as they are designed to go hand in hand with the program.
NED Coloring Face Masks
Parent/Guardian Encouragement Notes
If you'd like additional resources, they are available here.
And don’t forget to ask your student what they learned in the show about having a growth mindset from YET the Yeti, Captain Kindly and during NED’s visit on the spaceship!

Notes from the School Nurse
WINTER WELLNESS TIPS:
Eat healthy food, exercise, rest, and wash our hands! Students should not be in school if they have the following:
- A fever of 100.4 degrees or greater
- Vomiting or diarrhea because of illness
- An unknown rash or possible contagious condition
- Are unable to focus due to: pain, chronic health condition and acute illness
- Flu-like illness (with or without fever) – headache, fatigue, cough, aches, weakness and sore throat
- COVID positive result- student should remain home for 5 days from first symptom (recommended masking for 5 additional days upon return to school)
Additional Tips
- Hand washing with soap and water is a better choice than alcohol based sanitizers when available, especially for stomach related illnesses.
- Wash coats and book bags often.
Return to School
- A child should be free of symptoms of contagious disease (fever, vomiting, diarrhea, suspicious rash, etc.) for 24 hours without the using of fever reducing medication before returning to school.
- Please be prompt when picking up your ill or injured child in order to minimize his or her chance of spreading or acquiring a contagious illness.
Contact Nurse Britton to report any diagnosis
your child receives, questions or concerns.

Helpful Links & Info
Please notify the office about transportation changes via email at: beseagles@glnd.k12.va.us.
If you have daily transportation needs, please make sure you provide changes at the beginning of each week for the entire week. This allows staff time to communicate all necessary changes and avoids confusion when a call is not received. We appreciate your support.
Parents who wish to chaperone a field trip or volunteer regularly in our school must submit to a background check every 2 years using the BIB portal. The process is completely electronic. If you are having problems with the system, contact Demetra Harris at dharris@glnd.k12.va.us.
