Battle for Broad Street Game TONIGHT

October 6, 2023
From the Desk of Superintendent, Dr. Kevin S. Miller
Dear Licking Heights Families,
As you may know, 2022-23 Report Cards were released this week from the Ohio Department of Education. This year, Licking Heights earned four out of five stars, placing our district in the "Exceeds State Standards" category.
These annual report cards are important for our future planning—they are one piece of a puzzle of data that shows us where our students are academically and what we can do to help them continue to grow and develop. While we are pleased with this rating and have much to celebrate in our report card, know that our teams of educators at each school are already hard at work to provide students with a high-quality, five-star education in the 2023-24 school year.
Particular areas to celebrate from the 2022-23 Report Card include:
- Five out of five stars in the Progress category, which shows that not only did our students grow academically to the extent expected in 2022-2023—they significantly exceeded state expectations. As a matter-of-fact, out of over 600 school districts in the state of Ohio, Licking Heights students had the third highest rate of academic growth in the state.
- Five out of five stars in the Gap Closing category, which shows that we provide each student with an equitable, fair education, no matter what unique needs they may have.
- Exceeding growth expectations in English language arts and math for almost every student group.
- Very high levels of achievement for gifted students.
- Comparable report card scores and ratings with similar local districts (Pickerington, Canal Winchester, Southwest Licking, Delaware City).
- Our highest proficiency rates in US government and US history.

Our district is currently going through a data-driven strategic planning process to determine ways we can best support all students in their learning goals, and thanks to the outstanding efforts of our Curriculum team and staff, we will close even more gaps in the 2023-2024 school year–including improving our early literacy rates, proficiency rates, and graduation rates.
A school district is only as strong as the people who work there, the students who learn there, and the families who support it. Please join me in thanking the Licking Heights team members we have here who work together to provide our students with opportunities to succeed throughout life–and as always, thank you for your continued support of our schools.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kevin S. Miller, Superintendent

Transportation Update: Check the Lost and Found
Is your student missing anything? We have lots of lost items from our buses. Call Transportation at (740) 927-3340 to check.
Food Services Update: MySchoolBucks
Please allow 24 hours for funds to transfer to your student's account in MySchoolBucks. There are features in the settings tab of MySchoolBucks that can help you stay on top of account balance.
There is a feature that allows you to set a low balance threshold whereby you will be notified that the account is running low. If you set that threshold at a level that covers 2 or 3 days' meals, you have adequate time to apply the funds and for the third party systems to clear the transfer. Alternately, that same threshold can be set to automatically withdraw a predetermined amount approved by you directly to the account when the limit is reached.

South Elementary: Tooning in for an Art Lesson
Steve Harpster, the artist behind Harptoons and a favorite of elementary students at Licking Heights, visited South Elementary to teach students how to draw goofy animals and monsters. Steve also joined South for their Literacy Night, which brought families and students to South for free literacy activities and games.
West Elementary: 2023 APEX Fun Run
South and West Elementary Schools had their APEX fundraising events last week. They had Glow Dance Parties, mummified an APEX leader, and capped off the week with a Fun Run. Thank you to all the family volunteers who made the Fun Run possible.
North Elementary: Data Crunching with Mrs. Bernotas
Mrs. Bernotas' class used their five senses to describe apples and learn about their life cycle. They tasted different apples, collected data, and graphed their favorite type. They apple-solutely loved this lesson!
Central Intermediate: Having a Field Day
Mrs. Tonstad's fifth-grade students soaked up the sun and had loads of fun outside at Field Day last month.
Middle School: Picture-Perfect Memories
The Yearbook Club hit the field this week, capturing the spirit of our football team, cheerleaders, and volleyball squads. Learning photography skills while supporting classmates in sports—that is a winning combo.
High School: Honoring HBCUs with Mrs. Lindberg
Mrs. Lindberg’s African American Studies class learned about Historically Black Colleges and Universities and their importance. One student asked to take the reins as teacher, delivering an impressive lecture.
