A Message from the Principal
Dear Eccles Community,
I am so thankful for the Eccles Community. From our students to our staff to you at home, we have a community that is student centered, hard-working, generous, and collaborative.
A great example of this was the Pie Pick-up on Monday afternoon. Despite best laid plans, the driver from Salem was late and the pick-up could not be ready until after student pick-up. As soon as the truck arrived, parents jumped into action to unload, count and organize the pies. We had so many parent helpers facilitate the process that families could start picking up their pies within minutes of the truck arriving. This fundraiser was a great success because of you and your generosity. Thank you. And a big thank you to Jess Roberts and the Eccles PTA for their organization of this event.
This is just one of many examples that I can share about the different ways that our families and staff collaborate for our wonderful students. As we approach Thanksgiving, I am thinking of you and your students and how grateful I am to lead Eccles.
I wish you and your families the best over the next two weeks and the Thanksgiving holiday.
Sincerely,
Kelly

SPIRIT DAY!
Students have earned a spirit day! Last week at our assembly, they met their school-wide goal and earned an outstanding amount of blue tickets. TOMORROW—Friday, November 18 is Hat Day!
We want to help you get to know who we are. Each week we will highlight a couple of staff members. Enjoy getting to know a bit about us!
Meet Mrs. Dooley!
Mrs. Dooley is known as Mrs. Dooley to our students. Mrs. Dooley is our Instructional Specialist. She has been teaching for 17 year and has been teaching in Canby for 15 years-13 here at Eccles. You might here Mrs. Dooley say “Cool beans!” when she is working with students. Mrs. Dooley’s family includes her husband, Donovan, children Aubrey and Miles, and super sweet mutt, Libby Jean. They love camping, the Ducks, and family movie nights. Mrs. Dooley loves mysteries and historical fiction. She values humor and honesty in her friends and her motto is: “Inhale confidence, exhale doubt.” Say “Hi!” the next time you see Mrs. Dooley.
Meet Miss Siewell!
You may remember Miss Siewell from last week’s newsletter. She is our school counselor. Miss Siewell has been working with students for five years, three here in Canby. Her family includes her mom, Michelle, her older sister, Molly and her new fiancee, Trent. She has two pets: an 8-year-old cat named Waldo, who rocks a lion haircut; and a 4-year-old dog named Baker, who is a very sweet and energetic catahoula/lab mix. She values authenticity and humor in her friends and her hero is her mom because she works so hard, shows up for everyone, and has a positive outlook no matter the situation. A motto that is important to her is from her dad, “Take it easy.” Say “Hi!” the next time you see Miss Siewell.
Holiday Drive
The tree tags are up! If you would like to participate in our toy drive, come check out our tree in the office. It’s full of tags with suggestions for toys. You can bring any new or unwrapped toy to donate by December 1st!
Also, a big thank you to all who have participated in the coin drive for Kiwanis so far! Students have brought in $130 so far with the Beavers taking the lead! We will continue collecting coins through December 1st.
All of these efforts are in support of the Kiwanis Canby Community Food & Toy Drive, an event that has been serving Canby families for more than 60 years. Note that this year, Kiwanis will not collect food as in years’ past but coin funds will go toward food gift cards for families. Applications for assistance are available at the school office. Thanks for supporting Kiwanis!
A Message from the Counselor
Hello Eccles Community,
My name is Kelly Siewell and I am the School Counselor here at Eccles! I wanted to share a little bit about my role and give an update on what we are working on this month!
My role as the school counselor is to help to support the social, emotional and academic needs of all students. I accomplish this through individual student planning, providing responsive services and indirect student services.
This Month at Eccles:
The character skill we are focusing on for November & December is Problem Solving. At Eccles, students learn a problem solving process called STEP, which stands for:
S - Say the problem, without blame
T - Think of solutions
E - Explore consequences
P - Pick the best solution
Students also learn a variety of solutions to their problems. Depending on the situation, within STEP, there are several strategies a student could use to problem solve. During my classroom lessons I will highlight these strategies and the different situations they would be most appropriate. We encourage you to discuss our STEP problem solving process with your student and help develop his or her own problem solving strategies.
Thank you!
Kelly Siewell
Review New Library Selections
Canby School District is providing an opportunity for parents to review new library books before they go into circulation in the district libraries. The opportunity will take place at the Ackerman Library on Nov. 21 from 3-5 p.m. Those who attend will use Canby School District guidelines for selecting and reviewing library texts to submit a review form online.
Volunteers
Field trip chaperone opportunities are coming up! Or you may be looking to volunteer in your student’s classroom. If you did not complete this process last year, or are a new incoming family, an application must be submitted through the Canby School District.
Here’s what you need to know:
- This must be pre-arranged with the teacher and/or specialist that you are assisting.
- All new* volunteers must be registered and pass a background check in order to volunteer for any classroom, field trip, or activity on-site.
- All volunteers must sign in and out upon entry and exit of the school building.
We look forward to having you join us!
Meals at School
Your children may qualify for free meals or for reduced-price meals, and we now offer expanded income guidelines to qualify more families. If you plan to have your child eat school-provided breakfast or lunch, please fill out a Meal Application online at https://www.ode.state.or.us/apps/frlapp - Our district ensures that our nutrition programs are easily accessible to all families.
> Click here to put money on your child's lunch account <
Meals will always be provided to students, no matter their application status or meal plan balance.
Health Reminders
As school begins and we are starting to enter the cold and flu season, please remember to review our district and school health 'stay home guidelines'. If you have any questions about whether a student should stay home, please don't hesitate to contact the office and we can put you in touch with our Health Assistant or District Nurse. We appreciate your help in keeping not only your student, but all other students, staff and families healthy this school year.
