The Viking Spotlight is the part in my weekly newsletter used to highlight and celebrate our students and staff anytime we can! We had another great week last week! We ended the week on Friday with the finale for our 3-on-3 Advisory Basketball Tournament. The Notorious ASB Advisory defeated Ms. Campos' Advisory in the 8th vs. 7th final. Then on Friday, they challenged the staff team and the staff came out victorious!! Looking forward to another great week of Vikings settling in and getting into the curriculum of their classes. Remember Vikings, ask for help when you need it so you don't fall behind! Are you ready for another Music Monday?? 🎶 Congratulations to Mrs. Faiai-Su'eSu'e's Advisory class for winning last week's Music Monday! Remember, the 3rd caller to correctly name the artist and title of the song earns donuts for their entire Advisory class and points in 5-star! In addition to that, the winning Advisory class gets to pick the playlist for lunch that day! Who will be our next winner?!?! 😉

8th Graders, it's now your turn to take your Yearbook and ID card photo! Any 7th graders who did not attend Orientation, this is your makeup picture day! Be sure to come dressed and photo-ready for this Friday! All students will be required to take a picture and get an ID card. Additionally, any parents interested in purchasing school photos, please click HERE to order them ahead of time or you can pay afterwards.

We are coming up on our last couple of days before the Day 10 balance deadline. This means there will be some more class changes to reflect our enrollment needs, ensure proper placement and to meet teacher contractual class sizes. Thank you to all Viking students and parents who have been so understanding with the changes we have had so far. Rest assured, after Tuesday, there will be no more class changes. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as we complete the last of the schedule changes on Monday and possibly Tuesday.

We had a great time playing the 8th grade 3-on-3 Advisory Champs at lunch! 🏀 Ms. Scott, Mr. Ortega, and Mr. G took the W, but don't worry, Vikings, you'll get more chances this year to challenge our staff in our monthly Students vs Staff activities! 😉

After school on Friday, MVA Teachers and Admin engaged in Professional Development for two hours, where we reestablished our focus for this school year and discussed ways to engage, educate, and empower our Viking students! 💛 We modeled a variety of engagement strategies, analyzed data, and had constructive conversations about ways we can increase student achievement!🙌🏽 I'm so grateful for such an awesome staff at MVA! 💙 Let's do this, Vikings!🤗

Are you interested in playing baseball, softball, or basketball?!?! Well, now is your chance because our fall sports tryouts are coming up next week!! No experience necessary, however you must enroll in the after-school program in order to participate in sports! Please see the flyers below for more information!

National Night Out (Crime Prevention and Community Resource Fair) is on Tuesday, August 1, at the Robert Egger. Sr. (South Bay Recreation Center - 1885 Coronado Avenue, San Diego, CA 92154), from 5 PM to 7:30 PM with the Community Walk starting at 4:15 PM.

Students can earn points on 5-star by attending the community walk and wearing their Gold Viking shirts! Meet at the Rec Center by 4pm and look for Ms. Scott and the Mar Vista Academy sign to check-in and get your points! Hope to see you there! 💛

Viking Families, be sure to mark your calendars for Thursday, August 10th from 5:15-7:30pm for MVA's Open House 2023, or you may know it as 'Back to School Night'. Open House is an evening where parents/guardians come to campus and meet their child's teacher by attending each of their classes. The beginning of the event starts with a fair in the quad, community resources, food/drinks, and games, followed by a welcome by Principal Scott in the quad area, then attending Periods 1-6 in your child's schedule. This will be our first IN-PERSON Open House since August of 2019 so we are really excited to have parents/guardians come to campus!! We hope you can make it!

We will be starting our Saturday Academy on Saturday, August 12th. Saturday Academies are a great opportunity for Viking students to either get extra help/tutoring from a teacher or clear absences/tardies from school, or both. They are offered about twice a month throughout the semester, so be sure to save these dates listed below!

Remember ALL students will be able to participate in the free universal program offered in

California. This means that your children will be able to eat ONE (1) free breakfast/snack and ONE (1) lunch every day. Although meals are free, we ask that you still complete this form HERE, if you didn’t already do so during your online registration.

Use the form HERE to submit a photo taken with your school issued iPad of you and your classmates participating in our Spirit Days. The top participating Advisory each semester will earn a Pizza Party from the ASB.

Pictures submitted must CLEARLY show Vikings participating in the ASB Spirit Day ON CAMPUS for consideration (make this obvious). Photos that include inappropriate hand gestures, clothing attire, or suggest inappropriate behavior will not be taken into consideration and will be forwarded to MVA Administration for further review. All photos will be reviewed by the ASB.

Help our school be a safe place for you and your friends! If you have information on incidents surrounding bullying, vandalism, safety concerns, etc., report it anonymously to p3tips.com or use the app!

In an effort to help support our MVA students, we welcome any donations of school supplies and/or money. All funds would go directly to supporting our MVA students in the form of spirit shirts, celebrations, recognition awards, school supplies, and more. Checks can be made payable to Mar Vista Academy ASB and tax-deduction forms will be provided upon receipt. Any questions, please email Ms. Scott.
