EL/MS Attendance Policy
Regular attendance and arriving on time is critical for student learning.
Student absences will be limited to seven (7) total absences (excused and unexcused) per semester. The unused portion will not be carried into next semester. Students’ time spent out of school during scheduled instructional time for any reason (to arrive late, to leave early, or to be absent an entire day, whether excused or unexcused) is considered time absent from instruction. This time accumulates toward the total absent limit.
Letters will be sent to notify parents/guardians when a student reaches five (5) absences to serve as a warning notice.
Upon eight (8) total absences (excused and unexcused) per semester, the principal will send a second letter to parents/guardians as notification that the student has exceeded their absenteeism limit.
Make-up work for credit will be required for any absence. One day for each day of absence, with a maximum of five (5) days, will be allowed to make up work.
The administration has final discretion in all attendance decisions.
Upon eight (8) total absences (excused or unexcused) per semester, students may be referred to the juvenile office for further action.
Students missing 20% or more of the year (approximately 30 days) will be under consideration for retention and promotion to the next grade level will be reviewed before the administration.
Middle School: 3 tardies = 1 hour detention. Excessive tardies and absences may result in your child’s case being referred to the juvenile officer.
Character Trait of the Month
Honesty
Being truthful in what you say and do
A few examples of how to demonstrate honesty:
- Telling the truth
- Choosing not to cheat
- Admitting when you were wrong
- Telling important information (instead of purposely leaving out selective information)
- Returning something that belongs to others
- Doing the right thing (when you didn't have to)
Honesty is worth THREE PBS points during the month of February.
January Students of the Month
These students were chosen by their teachers for being shining examples of tolerance.
Counselor's Corner
Title Talk
Reading
A very important part of the Title 1 Reading and Math programs is parent involvement. One
organization that involves parents is the PTO. The PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) is a group of
teachers and parents that work together to enrich the educational experiences of our Mound City
Students. The organization raises money to provide supplies to teachers’ at all grade levels. The PTO is currently in the process of assisting the elementary and middle school with planning a Family Fun Night.
If you are interested in being a part of this, the PTO is having a meeting on Monday, February 6 th in the main gym. The meeting will follow our annual fundraiser, a jersey auction. Walking tacos begin at 5pm, with jersey auction to follow. The meeting will begin at approximately 6:15.
Math
- The K and 1st grade students did an AWESOME job on their Middle of the Year (MOY) testing! Both classes have worked hard and many students in the first grade were able to count to 100 or more in one owake subtraction equations, and then making an addition equation using the same numbers. This is known as a Fact Family. They are continuing to work on counting and writing their numbers to 100.
- 1st--They will be learning how to use tally marks and taking surveys. They will look at data and learn how to organize it into categories, and then how to interpret the results using picture graphs and charts.
- 2nd--Keep encouraging your child to count money and tell time, especially on an analog clock. They are doing a great job! This month they will be working on place values through 1,000. They are learning different ways to say the same number. For example: standard form is 234, word form is two hundred thirty-four, and expanded form is 200+30+4.
- 3rd--They will be using partial differences to subtract three digit numbers. They will be using regrouping to subtract, and will continue to use estimation to see if their answers are reasonable. They will also be learning to multiply by 10's.
- 4th--They will continue learning about and working with fractions. They will understand addition and subtraction of fractions and apply multiplication concepts to fractions.
Have FUN with numbers!
