Dear Parents/Guardians,

This Friday, we will welcome the Fire Safety House and the KONA ice truck. Every class will have an opportunity to visit both. This Friday, we encourage students to wear Red, Blue, or Camo in honor of First Responders and/or Military. KONA will have flavored ice, leis, souvenir cups, and color changing spoons for sale. Please see the flyer below for pricing. 25% of sales comes back to BES. We appreciate your support!


Any visitor to our building will pass through metal detection. We encourage you to leave personal items in your vehicles. When you enter our front door, there is a table and basket to the right. Anything that you are bringing in should be placed in that basket. Please clear metal detection and then ring the new buzzer that will allow you into the office area. The buzzer on the office door is a new safety feature. We appreciate your patience and cooperation with these safety measures.


We are glad to welcome our parents and families to eat lunch with their own child. Visitors should not pull other students to eat with their child. If you are coming for lunch, please make sure that you have your ID to check in and get a badge. Visitors should report to the sunroom to eat with their child. Once lunch is over, the student should return to their class for dismissal, and the parent/visitor should return to the office for check out. Visitors should not travel down the hallways or other places in the building. Thank you in advance for your help with this safety matter!

You can help your child by practicing addition and subtraction to support math fluency. There are numbers everywhere that can be used to make reviewing fun!

In ELA this week: 3rd Grade Scholars will use the text, The Islanders by Mary Alice Monroe. Scholars will study inferencing and will be assessed on their understanding of this skill.

Explorers will continue to study about Inventors and Inventions of the 1800's.

ELA

Scholars will focus on theme of a Literary Text this week. During word study, Scholars will learn about multiple meaning words and understanding the concept of analogies (synonyms, antonyms, part/whole, cause/effect, member/category). Scholars will be assessed on "ject" root words.


TGFD

Fifth graders have the opportunity to take part in the program To Good For Drugs. Students will attend classes weekly with Officer Parrott.

This week athletes will be learning about heart rate and the importance of a cool down period during physical activity. Physical activity is important to overall health and we want to encourage good habits early on.

This week Musicians in 3rd and 4th grade will be learning to read the treble clef staff using the musical alphabet. 5th grade Musicians will learn about syncopation in reggae music.

This week Artists in 3rd grade will continue to learn about the Architecture of downtown Blacksburg. Artists in 4th grade will learn about the Value Scale, and 5th graders will learn new techniques in applying the value scale.

Library

Scholars in 3rd grade will complete Continent research, while Scholars in 4th and 5th grades will be introduced to the featured author and book series for the month of October.
Event Information

Parent Conferences

Parent Conferences and the end of the first Quarter are quickly approaching. We will host Conferences on the evening of Thursday, October 19 and the Morning of Friday, October 20. There will not be school for students on Friday, October 20.

Weekly Reminders :)


  • Good News Club will meet on Tuesday. If you signed your child up, please send a transportation note for Tuesday.
  • If your student is on the Robotics team, practice will continue this week.
  • Please support your child by ensuring that their laptops are charged every day and brought to school each and every day!
  • Please turn in a note if your child is out of school for any reason. Truancy letters have been sent home for students that have missed three unexcused days in a row OR five unexcused days total.
  • Please send a note if there is a change in transportation. This note should include the child's first and last name, the change requested, length of the change, and a parent/guardian signature.
  • Pick-up for the Kids Club is in the back loop. Car riders are picked up in the back loop until 2:45. Please do not pick-up up from Kids Club before 2:45. Parents are required to sign their child out from Kids Club.
