4th Grade Science with Mr. McIntosh
Looking Back –
After studying the wonderful world of invertebrates in Unit 1, we turned our attention to how plants and animals interact. This focused on populations of organisms, where and how they live, and the reasons that some species thrive and others struggle. We investigated the ways in which different species compete for resources and what that competition means for their survival. Next week we will talk about how predators, prey, parasites, and beneficial relationships play a part. (See Looking Ahead below)
Lessons for Sept. 17-21: Unit 2, Lesson 1: Populations and Unit 2, Lesson 2: Competition
Key Vocabulary: populations, community, population boundary, population density, emigration, immigration, population sample, clumped, uniform spacing, random spacing, resource, limiting factors, competition
Looking Ahead -
As we start looking at the interaction of different organisms in the environment, we will see all kinds of relationships. Some are as simple as one animal eating another (predator/prey) while others may be more complex and involve one organism getting some kind of benefit that may not be obvious at first glance. This is where science goes to work in discovering exactly how plants and animals can work together to survive.
Lessons for the week of Sept. 24-28: Unit 2, Lesson 3: Predators and Prey, & Lesson 4: Symbiosis
Key Vocabulary: predator, prey, herbivore, adaptation, camouflage, symbiosis, symbiotic relationship, mutualism, parasitism, commensalism, parasite, host
Creature of the week – Let’s check out a fierce looking predator this week - the African bush viper (Atheris squamigera). Do some research before our next class and share what you have learned with your classmates!
4th Grade Social Studies with Mrs. Lipscomb
Hello 4th graders, I had such a great time with you last week participating in our "Celebrate Freedom" activities. We also wrapped up unit 1 and you should have taken the unit assessment in lesson 10. We have learned so much about the regions, agriculture, and economy of Texas. This week we will begin unit 2, Texas Long Ago, and complete lessons 1 and 2:
- Lesson 1 – People of the Western Hemisphere
- Lesson 2 – People of the Plains
We will spend time in class on Tuesday identifying the ways people have adapted to the environment and talk about the first regions to be farmed in Texas.
We are using GoFormative surveys each week for our TGA’s in social studies. Please be sure you are attending live Class Connect or watching the recording as soon as possible so that you can be successful and receive credit. Also, be sure to check the grade book to see if you have any missing assignments (M’s). I’ll see you in class on Tuesday!
