National Suicide Prevention Month
Recent actions such as Senate Bill 279 have been enacted to help curb the rise in suicides. This bill requires that each student identification card issued by a public school to a student in grade six and higher must have printed on the card the contact information for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-TALK) (8255), the Crisis Text Line (Text TX To 741741) and may have printed on the card information for a local suicide prevention hotline, if available. Both resources provide free 24/7 confidential crisis counseling and emotional support on any topic for people in distress.
Suicide Warning Signs
Warning signs that someone may be at immediate risk for attempting suicide include:
- Talking about wanting to die or wanting to kill themselves
- Talking about feeling empty or hopeless or having no reason to live
- Talking about feeling trapped or feeling that there are no solutions
- Feeling unbearable emotional or physical pain
- Talking about being a burden to others
- Withdrawing from family and friends
- Giving away important possessions
- Saying goodbye to friends and family
- Putting affairs in order, such as making a will
- Taking great risks that could lead to death, such as driving extremely fast
- Talking or thinking about death often
Other serious warning signs that someone may be at risk for attempting suicide include:
- Displaying extreme mood swings, suddenly changing from very sad to very calm or happy
- Making a plan or looking for ways to kill themselves, such as searching for lethal methods online, stockpiling pills, or buying a gun
- Talking about feeling great guilt or shame
- Using alcohol or drugs more often
- Acting anxious or agitated
- Changing eating or sleeping habits
- Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge
It is important to note that suicide is not a normal response to stress. Suicidal thoughts or actions are a sign of extreme distress and should not be ignored. If these warning signs apply to you or someone you know, get help as soon as possible, particularly if the behavior is new or has increased recently.
Here are five steps you can take to #BeThe1To help someone in emotional pain:
Falcon Former Student Spotlight: Nicole Hoo
Former Falcon student Nicole Hoo turned her CTE education at Royal into a successful career. Nicole is a Survey Technician for Percheron, and was recently featured in a promotional video about a day in her work life. CLICK HERE to view the video.
Mike and Val Hoo, Nicole's parents, stated, "The quiet mouse that FFA created has evolved into monster on a bigger stage. You guys don’t have an idea how fantastic FFA teach your students to improve their image for the future. That is why we all in our family promote and always talk about you all of the good job you are doing. And Nicole is the example. She is a programmer but does the technician research and mapping for the company. She is the only female in the Houston and surrounding areas. And she loves it. Thank you for teaching my daughter the value of public speaking in a higher level."
Congratulations, Nicole!
Scam of the Week: COVID-19 Is the Never-ending Phish Bait
Cybercriminals have used COVID-19 as phish bait since the start of the pandemic, and they’re not stopping any time soon. In a recent attack, scammers spoof your organization’s HR department and send a link to a “mandatory” vaccination status form. The phishing email claims that your local government requires all employees to complete the form. Failing to complete the form "could carry significant fines".
If you click the link in the email, you are directed to a realistic but fake login page for the Microsoft Outlook Web App. If you try to log in, you are asked to “verify” your name, birth date, and mailing address by typing this information into the fields provided. Once submitted, your information is sent directly to the cybercriminals, and you are redirected to a real vaccination form from your local government. The good news is that this form isn't actually mandatory. The bad news is that giving cybercriminals your personal information may lead to consequences much worse than a fine.
Remember these tips to avoid similar phishing attacks:
- Watch out for a sense of urgency, especially when there is a threat of a fine or a penalty.
- These scams rely on impulsive actions, so always think before you click.
- Never click on a link or download an attachment in an email that you were not expecting.
- If you receive an unexpected email from someone within your organization, stay cautious. Contact the person by phone or on a messaging app to confirm that they actually sent the email.
