Safeguarding & Procedural Information for School Visitors
We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children. As such we expect all staff, volunteers and visitors to share this common commitment.
Here are our expectations of you whilst visiting our school. It gives you information about our Safeguarding and Emergency Procedures. You can access this information at any time during your visit by scanning the QR code found in public spaces around the building.
We hope you enjoy your time at our school.
Keeping Everyone Safe
All visitors must sign in at the Office on arrival using the InVentry System.
A badge will print and this must be worn and be visible at all times.
Visitors are asked to read this leaflet in full on arrival on their first visit.
Visitors should remain in the Office reception area until a member of staff receives them.
Mobile phones should be switched to 'silent' on entry to the site. Should you require to answer it during the school day, please inform a member of the administration team on arrival.
Photographs are not to be taken unless by prior agreement.
Visitors should be excellent role models to all of our pupils by being respectful, fair and considerate of others. Remember children may interpret your words/actions differently.
Report to staff or SLT any unacceptable behaviour.
When working with a pupil(s) ensure you are visible to others at all times.
All visitors must sign out at the Office when leaving the site.

Information for Supply Teachers
When covering the class you should expect:
- Regular staff to be around to assist with practices & procedures where necessary.
- Well-behaved children who show respect and the other school values at all times. If this isn't the case, notify any member of regular staff immediately.
What we expect of you:
- To present in a professional manner.
- To follow the class teacher's planning left, feeding back to pupils appropriately and acknowledging all work.
*supply teachers who fail to follow planning or mark pupils' work will not be paid.
What to do if you think a child is at risk of harm
If you feel that a child may be at risk of harm but are not sure, then inform one of the Safeguarding Team immediately. They will offer advice and take appropriate action.
Child abuse can happen to any child regardless of elements such as gender, culture, religion, social background, ability or disability.
A copy of the STARMAT's Safeguarding Policy is located in the school office and staff room but you can access it by clicking the link below.
Types of Harm
We all have a responsibility to keep children (under the age of 18) safe, both at home and in school. Harm is identified in four ways:
Physical - when a child is deliberately hurt or injured.
Sexual - when a child is influenced or forced to take part in a sexual activity. This can also be an activity such as being made to look at inappropriate images.
Emotional - when a child is made to feel frightened, worthless or unloved. It can be by shouting, using threats or making fun of someone. It can also be when children see their parents, or visitors to the home, fighting or using violence.
Neglect - when a child is not being taken care of by their parents/carers. It can be poor hygiene, poor diet, not keeping appointments for additional support, not coming to school and being left home alone.
Remember... If in doubt... Ask!
Disclosures - What to do
If a child discloses they might be subject to abuse:
React calmly.
Listen carefully to the child, particularly what is said spontaneously. Do not promise confidentiality. Explain to the child that you must pass on the information if you are worried about their safety.
Do not ask leading questions or make judgements. Clarify and check your concern if you feel that you are not sure, but as soon as you believe that there might be a genuine issue, ask no further questions. This would compromise further enquiries.
Only trained investigators should question a child.
Reassure the child that they are doing the right thing.
Record carefully, on notepaper what the child says in their own words including how and when the account was given. This must then be dated and signed and immediately passed to one of the Safeguarding Team who will take a photo of your notes and upload them to CPOMS.
Staff Conduct
If you are concerned about the conduct of a member of staff, following an observation or disclosure, the following actions must be taken:
- Immediately inform the Executive Headteacher, Mr Martyn Broom.
- In their absence, email headteacher@ar.starmat.uk.
Fire & Emergency Procedures
Any person discovering a fire must:
- Operate the nearest fire alarm.
- The Fire Service are automatically notified by the alarm system.
On hearing the fire signal:
- Collect the class attendance list (located next to the classroom door) and make your way to the fire assembly point, located on the school playground.
- At all times, remain calm and quiet. Do not stop to collect your personal belongings.
Defibrilator
Lockdown Procedures
Do not attempt to engage with any intruder.
When the alarm sounds:
- If inside, close all windows, blinds and doors and seat the children together on the floor in the classroom.
- If around the school, calmly make your way to the nearest classroom and follow the point above.
- If outside, remain outside. Make your way to the bottom of the school field and notify someone if possible.
