Rayburn Administrators spearhead a campus wide campaign, "There's Power in Peace". This campaign strives to incorporate the concept of peace and respect which permeates in the everyday interactions of staff/faculty, students, administrators, counselors, and parents. This motto has helped to strengthen a positive and safe school climate. The following video depicts the unity of Rayburn students, faculty/staff , administrators, and counselors.
What's the responsibility of a school counselor?
The Texas Evaluation Model for Professional School Counselors (TEMPSC II) states that Texas professional school counselors are "dedicated to promoting human worth, dignity, uniqueness, and potential by helping students maximize their learning experience throughout their years in school (2004, pg. 5).
At Rayburn, counselors believe that it is important to effectively relate with students and parents, faculty/staff, and administrators to help enhance the students' personal/social, educational, and career development.
The school counselor fulfills this task by implementing a balanced guidance and counseling program using the 4 components:
* Guidance Curriculum- visit classrooms to teach life skills (i.e. responsible behavior)
* Responsive Services- provide individual and small group counseling
* Individual Planning-help students plan for their educational and career development
* System Support- support the efforts of the campus, teachers, parents, etc...
There are eight major domains that encompass a counselor's responsibility:
1. Program Management-implement a balanced comprehensive guidance program
2. Guidance- visit classrooms to proactively assist students to develop healthy life skills
3. Counseling-intervene to assist students with personal concerns affecting their focus
4. Consultation-consult with parents, faculty/staff, and admin to advocate for students
5. Coordination- bring resources into the school to optimize students academic success
6. Student Assessment-counselors help students interpret standardized test results
7. Professional Behavior-counselors demonstrate professional behavior with others
8. Professional Standards-adhere to professional rules, policies, and regulations
It is by engaging in these roles that counselors are evaluated on their performance and level of effectiveness.
