SC Chronicles

The Junior Class organized the December issue of the SC Chronicles.

Kiauna shows great interest in learning the material. She is very organized and remains committed to her success at school.

During the latter half of October and the first half of November, the STEM class students were tasked with designing and constructing a name plate for a teacher that could hold at least two pencils. The project began with a brainstorming session to create different designs for a name plate that would meet the requirements. After multiple ideas were thought of, the students were then put in to groups to discuss their different ideas and create a plan for what their final project would look like. Once a general idea was made, the students made multiple sketches showing different views of what their name plate should look like. CAD software was used to build their designs using the models they created in their sketches. The designs were then transferred to our 3D printers thus creating each groups name plate.

On November 19th, 2019 Sargent Central hosted Dr. Melanie Weiss. Dr. Weiss shared her story of addiction, and empowerment to the students of Sargent Central, Milnor and North Sargent.

Dr. Melanie Weiss is an optometrist that was born, raised and currently lives in Watertown, SD and has been in private practice for over 20 years. Ten years ago, after a series of surgeries, opioids took full control of her life. Dr. Weiss, made choices that would impact her entire life, but she made it her mission to not let her past define who she was and who she would become. Her message was clear you can be better tomorrow than you were today! And like her favorite quote says “Life is not about how fast you run or how high you climb, but how well you bounce.”

This presentation was brought to viewers by Sargent Central Student Council and Sargent County District Health.

Cybersecurity is new this year for students interested in computers. So far, they have learned about different computer viruses, as well as cyber-attacks and security breaches. They have also learned how they can use virtual machines to test programs to ensure that they don't have any viruses and won’t harm their computers. After, they learned how to adjust the different security settings in computers to allow access to other users as well as how to prevent other users from accessing their files. Now we are working on Cyber Literacy and Robotics by writing code for an Arduino Boe-Bot. This will allow them to have a better understanding of computer language by seeing how different code does different things. They started first by learning how to turn an LED light on and off, and they will eventually move into programming a Robot to move around the room.

On the 15th of November, the Health Careers class performed a mock surgery on potatoes. They removed the spleen and a leg and fixed a laceration.

On Monday, November 25th, six students attended the NDSCS John Deere Tech Day. Students discovered what it takes to become a John Deere Service Tehnician, learned about local dealership internships, and were able to visit with NDSCS staff about the service technician program.

The juniors are learning about propaganda and are tasked with creating their own advertisements.

The junior class is learning about World War 1. They are creating a poster about a battle the United States participated in. When they are finished they will have to present them in front of the class.

A new opportunity is available for students this year: an ITV Art Class. Here are some samples of student work.

Students worked with playdough and toothpicks to create models of different organic compounds.

Congratulations to Ethan Bergeman and Gage Swanson for being selected for UND Honor Choir.

SC Student Council raised over $400 for the Sargent County Food Pantry through a Bulldog clothing order!

Children were able to bring a special someone to Donut Day, which was Wednesday, November 6th, from 8-8:25.

PreK-12th grade choir performed for the veterans on Thursday, November 7th.

The seniors put on a kahoot for the whole school on Thursday, November 7th.

The Sargent Central One Act group performed their play "Cheating Death", on Tuesday, November 12th, from 2-3 p.m. Congratulations to Karah Zirnhelt for receiving a superior actor award at the regional One Act performance.

SC hosted a night of fun reading activities for elementary students. Volunteers from the high school helped out!

High school and junior high students helped around the surrounding communities on November 22nd. Some people went to the manor to enjoy time with the residents, some went to Rutland to clean up the surrounding buildings, and some cleaned the theater department in the AC.

The book fair took place in the Elementary Art Room from Tuesday, November 19th - Monday, November 25th.

The high school and elementary schools choir and band performed in the Activity Center on Tuesday, November 26th, at 7 p.m.

This year Thanksgiving fell on Thursday, November 28th. The FCS class made a Thanksgiving feast. Each kitchen prepared different traditional foods.

Students in grades 5-8 will participate in a STEM activity.

LeMar photography will be returning for picture retakes and winter sport pictures on Wednesday, December 4th.

The 11th grade class will be visiting Lisbon to learn about possible career options on Wednesday, December 11th.

Together time will take place on Friday, December 13th, during Cadet Block.

The Supporters for Education will be hosting Holiday Magic on Friday, December 13th, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. There will be food and bingo along with music performed by the Sargent Central High School band.

The first semester of the 2019-2020 school year ends on Friday, December 20th, 2019.

Christmas Vacation for the 2019 school year will begin on the 21st of December and ends on the 1st of January 2020.

Girls basketball started practice on November 18th.
