What's Been Going on at Cardinal Pole
Headteacher's Message
It’s been an exceptional start to the new academic year. Following our shortlisting for the TES Secondary School of the Year and our recent nomination for the Future Ed Personal Development and Well-Being School of the Year Award, we enjoyed record numbers of parents visiting our recent Open Events. The school is soaring in popularity amongst the local community, and I thank parents for all your support in encouraging those you know to visit us. I am also excited to announce our new exclusive East London-wide partnership with Paris Saint-Germain. This will be an exceptional opportunity, not only for our students here at school but also for the community in Hackney more widely over time. October saw our extensive Black History programme and celebrations take place. These events are incredibly important in the life of our school, and I thank parents for all your support once again. Black History Month seems to get bigger and bigger each year and long may that continue!
Finally, as we approach the start of Advent, our season of charitable activities begins in support of the local community and beyond. Your child’s Form Tutor will explain how they can get involved in this important time of year in the life of our school. Advent gives us a crucial opportunity to act in service of our Faith and reflect on Christ’s birth as we continue to pray for peace in our troubled world.
Yours in service,
Adam Hall

Black History Month
Sixth Form BHM Window Decoration
Our Sixth Form students window drawing to celebrate Black History Month.
They drew flags, images and wrote phrases that celebrate their heritage and culture!

Some of our lucky students had the privilege of getting their hair styled by Rufina!
Steel Pans Workshop
The students loved every second as they learnt how to use the instrument and play a song!
African Cup of Nations
We held our own African cup of nations. Our amazing Year 10 football team organised and led a charity competition. Form classes chose a country to represent, researched the country and then played a high quality competition after school. Well done to everyone that organised and played!
Black History Competition
Our whole school's Black History competition was an amazing success! We were overwhelmed by the number of entries from our talented students.
Black Writers
Students across the school received booklets with extracts from books written by inspirational and talented black writers! Students were invited to borrow their favourite book from the library.
Carnival Headdress
We were delighted to invite the amazing carnival company, Tropical Isles. They led a workshop on the history of Carnival, followed by a colourful workshop on carnival headdresses; our lucky students even got to make their own!

Literacy Activities
At Cardinal Pole Catholic School, we are passionate about offering our students a range of dynamic reading and writing-related activities. In addition to a well-stocked Library – which is well served by our Year 7 Hackney Reading Ambassadors – we facilitate many author workshops, competitions and trips which are designed to speak to the interests of our students. We are privileged to have our own School Poet, Christian Foley, who works with classes in Key Stage Three – and World Book Day is a highlight of our calendar.
Cardinal Pole School aims to provide students with targeted support to ensure that everyone enjoys reading and can fulfil their reading potential:
- The Literacy section of our website offers advice on how parents can support their child’s reading at home, as well as specific reading lists for each year group (https://www.cardinalpole.co.uk/page/?title=Literacy&pid=236)
- Guided Reading involves students in Years 7 to 10 reading the same novel with their form once a week in Prep.
- Year 7 and 8 students receive weekly Accelerated Reader sessions which are focused on reading for pleasure and celebrating success.
- Our Excellent Reader and Reading Recovery programmes boost student reading confidence.
To support you and your child further, we would greatly appreciate it if you could take the time to complete a short survey https://app.bouncetogether.co.uk/shrt/1AJ6W0059T which will inform our provision.
Catholic Life
To prepare for their Year of Service, the Year 12 Catholic Life Leadership team were invited to join a one-night residential retreat to drive into their role of Leadership and Service in the school and world. Upon entering the SPEC centre students were welcomed and introduced to the theme of the retreat, 'The Great Commission'.
The first day was packed with activities including a session on Faith and Trust, a reflection on the timeline of their lives so far and a discussion on the personality of Jesus and how well we know Him. After dinner, the students went outside on an Emmaus-style walk to reflect on their own personal faith journey before finishing the day with Adoration and a Campfire."
The next day, the students were trained in public speaking before finishing the retreat with Holy Mass.
The Year 12 Catholic Leadership team found the retreat very enjoyable and insightful, a chance to enter deep prayer and space to know the person of Jesus and reflect on His own leadership style.
The students were respectful and amazing role models in the way they represented the school; we are very proud of them.
Student Corner - Year 7 Experience by Mya
I like Cardinal Pole because everyone is nice and the teachers are wonderful.
If you are stuck on a question, you can always ask the teacher, and they will help you. I have settled in really well to Cardinal Pole, and I have made more new friends. I went to the summer school; it really helped me because I made friends and got to know the teachers. I am the only student from my primary school to come to Cardinal Pole, which worried me at first, but now I am glad I came to Cardinal Pole.
At break and lunch, I go to the sports hall and play basketball or I go outside and sit with my friends, we like to dance at break time. I am also a part of the Year 7 girls' football team and really enjoy playing in the matches against other schools. As the year goes on, I am excited to have an even better time at Cardinal Pole.
I Love Hackney
Where to Study?
In the lead up to Assessment Point 1 this term it is important for families to be aware of suitable and useful places of study in the borough.
A good study space enhances a child's ability to complete school work and revise for upcoming assessments. Outside of school hours this can be more challenging, therefore we have placed a link below to all the available Hackney libraries.
