BHS Bucks Principal's Update

Can you believe it's May already? Our semester is wrapping up and our end of year celebrations have started. This week we celebrate our teachers. I have had the opportunity to work in a few schools in my career, and none of them compare to the support and dedication of our BHS teachers. They truly want what is best for students and will do whatever they can to help them succeed, not only in the classroom, but in life. Sometimes life lessons are hard, but our teachers are caring and compassionate and will work with students to bounce back from those tough lessons to go on to be more resilient and persistent humans. Please take the opportunity to help me celebrate our Buchanan teachers by reaching out to them and letting them know that you also appreciate them and their work with our students. We are blessed to have them, and wouldn't be the strong community we are without them making the difference in the lives of our children. #ThankATeacher

Our counselor has visited each group of students in their class to help explain the scheduling process, options available, and answer questions about scheduling. Students have completed their course requests for next year. Our next step is loading those requests into PowerSchool. We anticipate students getting their schedules for next year in late May. While we do everything we can to create a schedule that works for students, staffing changes over the summer could greatly affect the schedule we create now. Students are encouraged to check their student emails often over the summer in case changes need to be made.

Spring testing is almost over. AP tests are this week and our final assessments given will be 8th grade NWEA in Math and Reading as well as final course assessments the last week of school.

Springfest is here! BHS celebrates Spring and our various athletic teams and clubs all week and ends with a pep assembly that travels to all of our district schools. Dress-up on these days of the week, and best dressed will be announced at the pep assembly. We will also be hosting our first Spring Fling formal dance on Friday May 6th from 7 - 11. Students grades 9-12 are invited and must be academically eligible to purchase a ticket (no more than one F). Tickets are on sale for $12.00. Any student who will be bringing a guest must pick up and complete a guest form and submit it to the office for approval.

ATTENTION SENIORS! Your time at BHS is rapidly coming to a close. Don't let procrastinating keep you from participating in all the graduation events coming up. May 27 - Graduation (7pm) Open to the public if weather permits an outdoor ceremony.

Local historian and collector, Bruce Hipshear and daughter Chelsea were in the building to share his collection of World War 2 and other military memorabilia. Students were able to see examples of uniforms, learn about badges, ribbons, and medals, as well as about artillery, food rations, and other gear. Mr. Hipshear has been sharing his collection with our students for over seven years, and it's always a pleasure to see and feel his growing collection of history.

Our Rocket League Esports team has had another successful season this semester in the Southwest Michigan Esports League. The team finished with a perfect 7-0 record in the regular season (2nd time in the last 3 seasons). The Bucks are waiting on playoffs to compete as the number 1 seed and potentially winning their 3rd straight championship.

Congratulations to these three students who placed in the Buchanan Art Center HS/MS Art Exhibition.

Congratulations to Audrey Leitz, a freshman, for earning a Division 1 rating at the State Solo and Ensemble for choir. Way to go Audrey!!

Mrs. Lentz' Earth Science students are modeling the layers of the atmosphere.

Our Science Olympiad team traveled to Michigan State University this past weekend to compete. They had a great time learning and exploring campus!

Buchanan High School will once again offer summer school for students grades 8-12 who need to recover credits due to failed courses over the year. This is a great opportunity for students to keep on pace and earn credits to be able to graduate with their class. The district has applied grant funds to help pay for this cost. Courses will be online using the Edmentum platform. All courses will be made available free of charge. Please visit the website at www.buchananschools.com for information and registration.

We have partnered with RXfundraising and Rite Aid to establish a fundraising program that earns funds every time a registered participant fills a prescription or shops at their local Rite Aid using their Wellness+ Rewards Number.

The program is free for participants to use and Buchanan High School will receive funds at the end of each quarter based on the number of prescriptions filled and qualifying purchases that its registered participants make. By following these simple steps below, you can make a difference for our community.

Once you have completed that, please make sure to register for a Rite Aid Wellness+ Rewards Number if you haven’t done so already. Then, transfer your existing prescriptions to Rite Aid and start using your Rite Aid Wellness+ Rewards Number to accrue funds for us on prescriptions and qualifying purchases.
