Message from the Principal...
Dear Families,
It's hard to believe that we are in our last term of this school year!
We are busy preparing for spring testing. Testing will begin on Thursday, May 20, and continue through Thursday, June 3. Please review the testing schedule and important information below.
As we near the end of this unforgettable school year, it is imperative that our scholars are in constant communication with their teachers and instructors. The last day of VGCC courses is Monday, May 10, 2021. For assistance with college courses, please contact Mrs. Faye Goode, our College Liaison. When contacting your college instructors, it is helpful to copy her on all emails.
The last day of NCVPS classes is Tuesday, May 18, 2021. For NCVPS courses, please contact your teacher. Do not hesitate to fully explain to them any difficulty that you are having, and what you feel you need in order to realize success in their class.
If you are having issues with your technology, please email us immediately so that we can arrange for you to get help as soon as possible.
Remember, EXCELLENCE IS NO ACCIDENT! We are champions for our scholars!

Social/Emotional Learning:
Our scholars are continuing to learn about social and emotional learning (SEL) skills and how to be resilient in uncertain times. SEL is the process in which individuals acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

WECHS Class of 2019: Nihya Alston - North Carolina State University
Nihya Alston is a junior at North Carolina State University. She is majoring in Animal Science, with a concentration in Agriculture Industries. While at NCSU, she is a member of the Animal Science Club and has worked at numerous facilities on campus, including the dairy and beef cattle unit. These units consist of food production cattle at NC State. In fact, all the dairy products on campus are produced by NC State's cows. They even have their own ice cream brand, "Howling Cow," that can be found in stores, as well as, in the ice cream shop in the student center. Although COVID cut the school year's activities short, being a part of this organization has given her a great learning experience as she prepares for her future career.
As an Animal Science major, she has had the opportunity to herd sheep and goats, learn how to evaluate live newborn piglets, and practice roping horses. Out of all the farm units on campus, she found her favorite to be the cattle units. She truly enjoys working with cattle and her future goals are to go into beef/dairy production.
During the spring of March 2020, instead of coming home for spring break, she traveled to Ashville, North Carolina to learn about food insecurity that affects North Carolina. As an agriculture major, she learned how food sustainability can be as easy as planting crops in a garden and harvesting them for yourself, or for local homeless shelters in the area. The week consisted of hiking in the mountains, picking up litter, enjoying campfires, visiting downtown Ashville to learn about the homeless community, and learning successful budgeting practices.
We hope to use our Alumni Spotlight to connect and build a strong alumni network across the state, country, and world! Scholars, you are encouraged to reach out to these Alumni, especially if you connect to their story.
Other Alumni: if you would like to be featured in future spotlights, please feel free to email Mrs. Judkins at sjudkins@warrenk12nc.org or Ms. Parks at lparks@warrenk12nc.org.
Happy Nurses Week, Nurse Hughes!
