Pecatonica #321 Curriculum Corner

April brought on significant change for our local Board of Education as three of its long-standing members are stepping away from service. The Pecatonica School District would like to thank Don Miller, Sally Hoff, and Kim Greene for their years of service to the community of Pecatonica. Don Miller has been serving on the Board for 20 years, Sally Hoff has served for 18 years, and Kim Greene has served for 12 years. With the three combined, the district is losing over 50 years of service. We thank each and every one of them for all they have done for the students, staff, and community of Pecatonica, and we wish them all well in their future endeavors!

Over spring break, Jamie Christiansen (PES Kindergarten teacher) took 23 students and six other adults to Washington D.C. It included mostly 7th and 8th graders, but two high school students went as well because they missed out on their travel due to COVID. Additionally, four of our students got to lay a Pecatonica wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. It was truly an experience to remember!

On Friday, April 28, Pecatonica Schools hosted the Relevant Speakers Network to speak with students in grades 4-12. Austin Lanier and Hero held three sessions throughout the district and spoke with students about a variety of topics including positive social media usage, encouraging positive diversity, and community kindness. Not only did students receive a message of positivity, but they also engaged in fun-filled sessions.

This is an award which recognizes the following outstanding qualities: leadership, a positive attitude toward learning, a desire for improvement, enthusiasm about school, being helpful to others, and involvement in extracurricular activities. Students are nominated for Student of the Month by one or more of the staff at Pecatonica High School. They may win this honor only once per year. Students were honored through announcements and received a certificate at the beginning of the Board of Education meeting on Monday, April 17th.

On April 27th, PCMS held it first Evening with the STARS (Students in Technology, Art, Reading and Science) night at PCMS. Among the displays were the following:

8th grade - Energy Fair

7th grade - Energy and Math games

6th Grade - Wax Museum - South Hallway

5th grade - DISPLAY Literature /Social Studies - Cafeteria

Art Show displayed - North hallway

There was also face painting, tattoos (temporary), and balloons by Student Council. To top the night off several food trucks made an appearance including Sizz & FIzz, LaRocha Tacos, and Rosie’s Coffee. It was a fun night had by all!

On the evening of April 26th, PES hosted their annual book fair/art fair. Families were invited to view student masterpieces and shop the latest page-turners. The cafeteria was even transformed into a magical artistic space complete with a tree in the middle! Special thanks to all the teachers and staff who made this happen for the students.
