Classroom Spotlight - Mrs. Keahon's Third Grade
Third graders have been studying about adaptations that allow organisms to survive in a certain environments. As a unit project, all third graders were given a cork and asked to “design” a creature that would be able to survive in the changing and now very windy environment of Brooksylvania.
It is exciting to see all the very different and individualized creatures and their adaptations that will help them to eat, breathe, move, and stay safe. Listening to a student’s thought process and explanation of why a creature has certain features or adaptations has proven to be invaluable.
3K is anxiously awaiting to see if their cork creature will survive or be blown out of Brooksylvania.

PARCC Talking Point of the Week
PARCC Helps Students Meet High School Graduation Requirements
In prior communications, the district notified parents/guardians that during New Jersey’s transition from the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) to the Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC), students in the classes of 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 would be able to demonstrate proficiencies in English Language Arts and Mathematics by either passing the PARCC assessments, meeting the “cut score” on a substitute assessment, or by meeting the criteria of the portfolio appeal process.
In November, the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) announced the “cut scores” students must meet in order for a particular assessment to count toward a graduation requirement. Those scores are depicted in the table below. Please note that all students in these classes need to meet at least one of the benchmarks outlined in each subject area in order to graduate.
Note: * SAT taken prior to March 2016; ** PSAT taken prior to October 2015; ***PSAT taken after October 2015. The College Board will establish new ‘threshold scores’ in May 2016 for the new SAT.
Health Office - Mrs. Bolton
March is National Nutrition Month
Try one or all of these helpful and healthy tips from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics:
- Eat Breakfast Start your morning with a healthy breakfast that includes lean protein, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Try making a breakfast burrito with scrambled eggs, low-fat cheese, salsa and a whole wheat tortilla or a parfait with low-fat plain yogurt, fruit and whole grain cereal.
- Make Half Your Plate Fruits and Vegetables Fruits and veggies add color, flavor and texture plus vitamins, minerals and fiber to your plate. Make 2 cups of fruit and 2 ½ cups of vegetables your daily goal. Experiment with different types, including fresh, frozen and canned.
- Watch Portion Sizes Get out the measuring cups and see how close your portions are to the recommended serving size. Use half your plate for fruits and vegetables and the other half for grains and lean protein foods. To complete the meal, add a serving of fat-free or low-fat milk or yogurt.
- Be Active Regular physical activity has so many health benefits. Start by doing what exercise you can for at least 10 minutes at a time. Children and teens should get 60 or more minutes of physical activity per day, and adults should get two hours and 30 minutes per week. You don’t have to hit the gym—take a walk after dinner or play a game of catch or basketball.
Sincerely,
Mary Ellen U. Bolton, MA, RN, NJ-CSN
Community Flyers
In our on-going efforts to reduce paper and go green, we are piloting an online opportunity for managing the flyers we receive from our community partners. We would like for our Brookside community to join the district’s paperless initiative as you have seen by our weekly e-Newsletter.
If you click on http://bit.ly/WWRSDcommunityflyers you will be taken to the community portion of the district website where you can access:
- the newest flyers received in the current week
- flyers received previously and are still active, and...
- an archive of older flyers that are no longer active, but available for your review.
