"National Poverty in America Awareness is observed each January by spotlighting one of the most pervasive and persistent problems in society. A great way to raise children's awareness of poverty struggles is through books and stories.
A book that uses humor and warmth with a dilemma about hunger is Maddi's Fridge. A summary is provided here: Best friends Sofia and Maddi live in the same neighborhood, go to the same school, and play in the same park, but while Sofia's fridge at home is full of nutritious food, the fridge at Maddi's house is empty. Sofia learns that Maddi's family doesn't have enough money to fill their fridge and promises Maddi she'll keep this discovery a secret. But because Sofia wants to help her friend, she's faced with a difficult decision: to keep her promise or tell her parents about Maddi's empty fridge. Filled with colorful artwork, this storybook addresses issues of poverty with honesty and sensitivity while instilling important lessons in friendship, empathy, trust, and helping others.

No School On Monday-Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
We have a day off on Monday and it's always important to know why we are taking a day away from learning. Monday is a federal holiday in the United States marking the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year.
All ages can learn and understand the significance of the holiday and for our Primary age group, they may not be ready for the details of civil rights, but they can understand that every person should be treated equitably and with kindness. As a family you can discuss fairness and there are great books and videos out there that are great to use to start a conversation.
Here is a video by PBS Kids that you might want to watch as a family. It's a short introduction to his story.
The Great Kindness Challenge!

We want to foster kindness throughout the whole year, but we place a special emphasis during this special week. More information will come out next week including special spirit days and challenges.
