February is Career and Technical Education Month and #PointerNation was proud to welcome Assistant State Superintendent of the Division for Academic Excellence Duy Nguyen, as well as other education leaders from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and CESA 3 last Tuesday! Our agriculture, tech ed, media, and business departments were honored and excited to showcase some of our extensive opportunities that prepare students for a successful future after high school, no matter what path they choose.

A big congrats to our Dodgeville/Mineral Point/Iowa-Grant Gymnasts who are State Bound! At Friday's Platteville Sectional, Pointer Ally Baehler took 4th on the Beam, and Dodger Brooklyn Murphy 3rd on Floor, to advance to this Saturday's WIAA State Meet in Wisconsin Rapids. D/MP/IG finished 4th as a team out of eight entrants. Great job!

#PointerNation Senior Griffin Albaugh was chosen to attend the Senate Scholar Program, which is an elite program designed to challenge Wisconsin’s best students. Griffin represented Senate District 17, which is represented by Senator Howard Marklein, and spent the week in Madison, along with other high school Juniors and Seniors from around the state. During the week, Griffin was introduced to many facets of the legislative process. He met with legislative support agencies, legislative staff, the Governor and First Lady, members of the media, lobbyists, Supreme Court clerks and University of Wisconsin-Madison faculty members. Griffin also attended the Governor’s 2023-25 Budget Address and was able to see the Joint Finance Committee in session, which Senator Marklein is co-chair. The week’s events culminated in a Senate Scholar Committee hearing on a bill that Griffin helped draft. Griffin did an outstanding job representing Mineral Point!

Our Middle School's Kindness Club is promoting and creating a culture of kindness in our school. Each week we will be giving a 'shoutout' to students caught being kind. Congrats to Lydia Moyer! Lydia makes a point of saying "Good Morning" or "Hello" to a student every day.

MP Communications Director and Wisconsin School Public Relations Association (WSPRA) President Joelle Doye attended the National School Public Relations Association Presidents Summit in Chicago recently. Joelle had the honor of presenting an Idea Spark Session on small district outreach. For two full days, chapter leaders from around the country were able to come together to share, learn, and listen -- all in the name of elevating the school pr profession and, ultimately, supporting all students. A huge thank you to sponsors for making this a free event. Joelle is pictured here along with other chapter leaders who attended from the North Central Region (Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Wisconsin).

A reminder -- there will be a High School Virtual Day Wednesday, March 1 due to Sources of Strength training. (Elementary and Middle school will have in-person classes) Sources of Strength is a best practice youth mental health promotion and suicide prevention program designed to harness the power of peer social networks to create healthy norms and culture, ultimately preventing bullying, violence, suicide, and substance misuse. The mission of Sources of Strength is to prevent adverse outcomes by increasing wellbeing, help-seeking, resiliency, healthy coping, and belonging. Sources of Strength moves beyond a singular focus on risk factors by utilizing an upstream approach for youth suicide prevention. This upstream model strengthens multiple sources of support, or protective factors for young people so that when times get hard, they have strengths to rely on.

Update: Due to inclement weather, the next Mineral Point Early Childhood Development Screening will now take place Wednesday, March 1! If you signed up for a time on the original date of 2/22, and this time no longer works for you on 3/1, please call 608-987-0739 ext. 127. Otherwise, you can come at your previously scheduled time. This screening is open to children who were born between the dates of 9/1/19 and 8/31/20. We look forward to welcoming everyone!

The Mineral Point High School Football team is looking for three Assistant Coaches (one JV Defensive Coordinator and two Program Assistants) for the 2023 Football season. Candidates must be available Monday through Friday after school for practices and games. They will have a staff meeting on Sundays as well during the season. Practice will start for the season on August 1st and will end in November. Coaches must be able to lead or assist in an offensive or defensive position group. Coaches must be good role models, have high integrity, and be able to communicate with all staff and students at a high level. Coaches will need to be able to lead the JV team and Freshman team if games are available for the Freshmen. Other duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: weight room supervision, locker room supervision, and bus supervision. Each position is paid by either the school or the Gridiron Club. Please send a resume and a letter of interest to Athletic Director Vickie Dahl at vickie.dahl@mp.k12.wi.us by March 1.
