Black History Month was officially recognized as a month long celebration in 1976. February was chosen because both Fredrick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln celebrate their birthdays during February. During Black History Month, special emphasis is placed on recognizing the contributions of African Americans to the U.S. We encourage you to learn more about Black History Month. Arizona was originally part of the Spanish and Mexican territories; it became an official state on February 14, 1912. Arizona is the only state where the Saguaro cactus grows. The Grand Canyon, located in Northern Arizona the Grand Canyon is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, being the only one located within the United States. Did you know that the lead singer from Linkin Park, Chester Bennington, was originally from Arizona? He attended both Centennial and Greenway High School!

What are three fun facts about you?

1. I can do a headstand.

2. I played in a dodgeball tournament in Vegas.

3. Adaptable and up for trying new things!

What do you look forward to the most in your new role as an Academic Coach here at HHSO?

Inspiring students, especially the ones who are more in school just because they have to. I’d love to help them change their perspective on how education can be a great tool and re-look at their life. Defining their view of success and helping shift their mindset to a positive outlook.

What was your life like growing up and up until you came here to HHSO?

I migrated from Guatemala with my mom and brother when I was young. We lived with my aunt during that time as well. When I was little, it felt more fun, so I didn’t realize how rough our situation was. I didn’t have many opportunities when I was younger, and I always had to work harder to reach my goals. My dream was to become a doctor, but I realized it wasn’t the type of life I wanted. I had an epiphany that I wanted a better work-life balance.

What are your favorite hobbies and interests outside of work?

During my free time, I enjoy volunteering, traveling, hanging out with friends, playing Pokemon on my switch, and staying home. I also love a cool climate in the woods with snow! My favorite foods include Mediterranean, Indian, and great pizza.

What famous person would you’d like to meet and why?

Maya Angelo: She is inspirational despite the hardships she experienced. It would be so cool to learn how she surpassed those moments.

HHSO recently challenged our students to create a visual project for a chance to win a Chromebook, a pizza party, and other smaller prizes! Students were asked to create visuals showing aspects of a growth mindset for the students to be able to refer to and utilize in their 2023 school year. Participants attended the Virtual cafes to present their visuals and learn more about growth mindset! Everyone was a winner with two lucky students going home with a Chromebook and a pizza party! Please keep a lookout for HHSO announcements for a chance to win some more super cool prizes! You can't win if you don't play :)

Recently, there has been a large number of Honor Code Violations. An Honor Code Violation (HCV) occurs when a student uses another person's information for their assignment. HCVs may mean students are intentionally copying and pasting from the internet, changing words here and there, and even using too much of someone else's information in contrast to their own. There are plenty of reasons why this is unacceptable, but we will focus on one. When we plagiarize or cheat on an assignment, we declare that our grade for that assignment is more important than our integrity. Integrity is a trait that will positively impact your life forever, far longer than any assignment grade ever could. Whenever we plagiarize, we cheat ourselves out of our true character, and no assignment is worth that.

11th Grade ACT March 21st-April 13th (Tuesday-Thursday)

11th Grade AzSCI March 20th-April 14th

State testing is MANDATORY and IN PERSON! Look for an email this month with dates, times, and locations!
