Corona High School - A Tradition of Excellence Since 1896
Greetings Panther Families!
Week 2 is successfully in the books, summer memories are long gone, and we are moving along with a bang in 2018-19! This was already a busy week with Back-to-School Night, athletics events, and preparing for our Homecoming dance this Saturday at 7:30 pm in our main gym. It was great to see so many parents come out for BTSN to meet our teachers and learn more about your student's classroom expectations and supports. Thank you for taking the time to come out!
Since school has started, I was able to visit every 9th grade ELA classroom to welcome our newest Panthers to Corona High School. Part of my messaging to each freshman was for them to get involved outside of the classroom. Research has shown that as students are more involved at their school and build positive connections, their academic performance is likely to improve. At Corona we pride ourselves in all the ways our students can get involved. We have a competitive athletics program with 23 CIF varsity sports which now includes cheerleading as a sport. Aside from athletics, our visual & performing arts (VAPA) programs are absolutely amazing! Students can act, sing, dance, play an instrument in the Red Coat Regiment or Jazz band, take photography, paint, sculpt, and be as artistically creative as they can possibly be in any number of other ways. Other extracurricular activities include leadership opportunities and well over 30 student clubs such as community service, gardening, spreading kindness, anime, and a whole lot more interests. A crowd favorite is our award-winning Funky Phresh Krew (FPK) dance team that's always a hit at assemblies and other events including competitions. Please encourage your student to find someway to get involved. This will make their high school experience much more enriching and memorable!
With us being so early in the school year, I want to make sure that all our students have a strong start and build momentum to carry them all the way through winter break and the last day of school, which is June 5, 2019. In order for this to occur, I cannot overemphasize the importance of developing some positive habits early on and sticking to them. Please talk to your students daily about what's happening at school, ask about their friends and teachers, and provide them with uninterrupted quite time to study and complete homework. Organization and time management skills are critical to any level of success. Make sure you click on the link at the bottom of this Panther Prowl about 20 tips to be successful in high school.
Enjoy your second edition of the Panther Prowl for 2018-19 and the last one for the month of August. RAWR!!!
Proudly,
Antonio Gonzalez, Ed.D.,
Principal

Panther Academic Saturday School (PASS)
As we did last year, we will once again be offering PASS on select Saturdays beginning on September 8th. We are still working on finalizing the schedule, but look for PASS updates here, on my Twitter account (@CoronaPrincpal) and other social media outlets, and our school website. Support offered will vary from week to week depending on teacher availability. Please note that PASS will not be offered on 3-day weekends or over breaks.
Due to us having lost 5 days of instruction, PASS can be a great opportunity to make up some of that time over the course of the semester/year.
As of now, we have the following support confirmed for September 8 from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm:
- Biology with Ms. Sainato
- Spanish with Mr. Quillen and Ms. Gomez
RAWR
Over the last couple of years or so we have developed a set of student behavior expectations to foster a more positive school climate and student success. "RAWR" has long been a cry of Corona Panthers and now it is also represents our student expectations. This year we have made these expectations the center of what we do as a school. RAWR stands for:
- Respectful: Panthers honor the worth and value of themselves and others
- Accountable: Panthers strive to take ownership of their actions and success
- Well-connected: Panthers are actively involved in their education and school community
- Resilient: Panthers bounce back from difficult experiences and mistakes
Corona STEM Academy/CTE Pathways
Advanced Placement
The most challenging classes offered at most high schools are usually Advanced Placement (AP) courses. The rigor is at college-level, so if students pass the AP exams (on a 5-point scale) they may earn college credit. Every year we seem to have students who pass enough AP exams over the course of their high school career that they enter college as sophomores (2nd year students). In the long run, the cost of taking these tests can save hundreds, if not thousands of dollars once students get to college. For those students that score a 3 or higher on three or more tests, they earn the distinction of being AP Scholars. Below are current Corona students who have earned this distinction as a result of last year's exams:
- Maria Acorn
- Shantay Alvarez
- Jared Changizian
- Melinda Doerr
- Alexandra Fernandez
- Thomas Gatewood
- John Golden
- Omar Gutierrez
- Azucena Jimenez
- Jonathan Kim
- Kevin Mancilla
- Reagan Marshall
- Mikayla McMillan
- Jazlynn Meza
- Sagar Nadasia
- Emily Silvis
- Karina Sotelo
- Hailey Stankiewicz
- Breanna Taylor
- Caitlyn Wagner
AP Scholars with Honor (these are students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more exams):
- Jacquelynn Glassick
- Bradley Manzo
- Matthew Nguyen
AP Scholar with Distinction (these are students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more exams):
- Makenna Wells

ASB/Activities
ASB Cards
A great way for your child to have a better high school experience is by getting him/her involved in any of extracurricular activities and events. An ASB card provides opportunities throughout the year for our students get involved while saving money. This little card can very well end up saving $$$ over the course of the year and can even pay for itself after only a few uses. Here are some of the perks:
- FREE admission to ALL home sporting events, excluding CIF playoffs (these are never free); that's a savings of at least $125
- Discounts on ALL dances and events (including the Performing Arts); that's another savings of at least $30
- FREE athletic patches and inserts (patches cost $20 without an ASB card and inserts cost $5); that's a potential savings of at least $25
- FREE giveaways on GOT ASB? Days (last Friday students received a free t-shirt)
- ASB Cards can be purchased for $40 in the Student Store, but students receive benefits valued at approximately $200 (maybe even more as new activities get added to the calendar throughout the year)
Homecoming Dance and Spirit Week
Due the the delay in the school year, HoCo seems to be coming a lot earlier than it has in the past. This year's theme, Electric Jungle, is sure to electrify our students. Although tickets have been on sale in our Student Store since school began, we will still be selling tickets at the door for $25 w/ASB card, $30 without. Don't let your senior miss out on his/her last HoCo experience of his/her high school career. Dance starts at 7:30 pm. Let's keep those memories coming!
Also, if you see your student leaving the house next week in jungle-type attire, it's perfectly acceptable. The week between the HoCo dance and the HoCo game is our HoCo Spirit Week! To remain consistent with our Electric Jungle theme, we want all our students to show their school spirit by dressing up in their best jungle wear. See flyer below for each day's theme.
Athletics
- Football: Fresh off an exciting victory over Rancho Christian High School last week, our Panthers are at it again tonight (August 31st) against Murrieta Mesa HS at Norco High School. Due to a delay in the installation of our new field turf, our debut will be our Homecoming game on September 7th. Until then, be sure to come out and support our Panthers! See the league standings below.
- Cross Country: Cross country started their season with an intrasquad meet at Butterfield park. The Red and Gold meet has been a tradition at Corona High for many years. This race allows runners to compete against one another as well as preview the course. This course is where two of the three league meets will be held this year. Many of the athletes raced their fastest times and were able to showcase their talent in front of their friends and families. Three of the runners were recognized for their efforts (pictured below). Christian Eid, a sophomore returner, had a very strong finish at the race and ended up placing 4th overall. Christian has improved a lot from last year and is predicted to be a part of our scoring Varsity team this season. Jacob Madriaga, a freshman, joined the team just a few weeks ago and ended up placing 8th for the team. This puts him as the top JV runner for the team, which could earn him a varsity spot by the end of the season. Xochilit Rodriguez, a junior, joined the team this year. She ran sprints for the track team last year, but took on the challenge of running cross country this season, and has been a great addition to the team. She placed second for our ladies at this race and will be a strong competitor this season. Coach Porter and Coach Sonja are excited for the season!
- Girls Volleyball: Head Coach Schroeder and Assistant Coach Beyersdorf have our girls riding a 5-game winning streak with their most recent victory over La Sierra HS at home in 4 sets. In fact, volleyball swept by all three levels (freshmen, JV, and varsity) earning victories! Terran Noreyko and Logan Schroeder both made double digits in kills. Front row players Rylee Goodrich, Shaniah Alama, and Terran Noreyko combined for 11 stuff blocks. The Panthers as a team served at 92% and take their 5-game winning streak into homecoming weekend!
- Girls Golf: Earlier this week Corona Girls fell to Lakeside in another close match which was played at Dos Lagos Golf Course. The Panthers were led by Jule Gutierrez and Emily Baird. Great job to the entire team as they improved their overall score by 6 strokes. This improvement led to a victory on Thursday, August 30th! Great work Panthers!
- Girls Tennis: Fresh off another victory over La Sierra, our Panthers are off to a great start at 2-0. Keep it up!
