A Parent's Guide to Section 504 in Public Schools

Section 504 is an important civil rights law that can provide educational benefits to kids with learning disabilities and/or ADHD in public schools. This article attempts to answer basic questions pertaining to the implementation of Section 504 in public school systems.

Resources to Help All Struggling Readers

The Office of Disability Services - §504 and Dyslexia is pleased to provide 8 modules as a resource for classroom teachers to support students with reading difficulties, such as dyslexia.

Each module has background information, research about implementing a specific reading instruction in the classroom, and three video activities that target that specific reading instruction. Teachers will receive a Certificate of Completion for each module completed that may be used toward their Professional Development time.

Talking Book Program

The Talking Book Program (TBP) provides digital audio, large print and Braille books and magazines to Texans who cannot read standard print due to a qualifying visual, physical or reading disability, such as dyslexia. Throughout Texas, children with disabilities that prevent them from reading standard print are enjoying the world of reading through TBP. This program offers thousands of books that students can use in their schoolwork. The collection includes titles for all ages, including literary classics, fairy tales, poetry, mysteries, sports, science fiction and biographies.

How do I apply?

If a person meets one or more of the criteria above, fill out an application and have it certified.
