5th Grade Science with Mr. McIntosh
Looking Back –
We have finished our second full unit as we studied the ecosystems and environmental factors that provide the necessary ingredients for some life to flourish while other species may be threatened with extinction. These topics have given us opportunities to look at fascinating topics such as global warming, the water and carbon cycles, and what volcanic activity may mean for the future. In the Looking Ahead section, we turn our attention to how animals and plants come to look and act the way that they do.
Lessons for Sept. 17-21: Unit 2, Lesson 5: Changing Environmental Conditions, & Lesson 6: Unit 2 Review and Assessment
TGA #1 is due 9/24! Get it done by Monday!
Key Vocabulary: limiting factor, environmental conditions, climate, ecology
Looking Ahead -
Inherited traits will jump into the exploration of how some traits are passed from parents to offspring. Did you inherit your father’s nose or the color of your mother’s eyes? You will be reading from the Harcourt text on pages A50-57 and completing some interesting investigations of your personal traits using nothing more than your observations and journal. Have fun with this!
Assignments for the week of Sept. 24-28: Unit 3, Lesson 1: Inherited Traits, Part 1 and Unit 3, Lesson 2: Inherited Traits, Part 2
Key vocabulary: inherited trait, dominant, recessive, gene, probability
Creature of the week – Let’s check out a fierce looking predator this week - the African bush viper (Atheris squamigera). Do some research before our next class and share what you have learned with your classmates!

Please be sure you are attending live Class Connect or watching the recording as soon as possible so that you can be successful and receive credit.
