Happy New Year!! This was a much needed break as we prepare for the second half of the school year. Please be reminded that we are middle level educators that are responsible for developing adolescent children who are often lost or misguided. It will be necessary to review classroom expectations and standards of performance. Additionally, students will need to be guided in making a connection between the performance goals for their classes and the actions required to meet those goals.

Your commitment to closing the learning gaps for students is appreciated. This can only be done if students are pushed to perform to their maximum potential. Additionally, as a school we must communicate our expectations, be consistent in our implementation of best practices and hold ourselves, as well as students, accountable for meeting outcomes. We control the environment created for student learning. Please let us know if there is anything needed as we re-establish rituals and routines throughout the school.

Lets give a warm EEMJS welcome to Ms. Rhodora Vargas who is joining our staff as a 6th grade science teacher.

• Ms. Tierra Duppins for her commitment in diligently serving our 6th grade students as a long-term substitute for the first half of the school year. We are deeply thankful for your consistency and efforts!

Although fairly common for students to think and act with their hands at this age, it is not behavior that is condoned or acceptable. Our response to violence has been suspension, however, it is not a proactive approach. Beginning tomorrow, we will reward students with a dress down day for every 15 days of non-violence. The days will be counted by grade level and days will be awarded as such. For example, the first available dress down day will be on Friday, January 25th. Only the grade levels that have had no instances of violence by the 23rd (day 15) will be allowed to participate.

With the 2nd quarter ending in just four short weeks, it is imperative that parents receive notification if their child is in danger of failing your course. To that end, each student who has below a 70% MUST receive letter between Thursday, January 10th and Friday, January 11th. These letters must be distributed to students and returned with a parent signature. A schoolwide phone call will be made notifying parents that the letters are coming home.
