November 2023

A Note from Mrs. Shirley
Dear OHE Families,
As the seasons begin to change, I’m reminded of the transformation that occurs each year as our students begin to grow and develop as learners in our school. I’m so proud of the maturity and commitment OHE students have to learning and growing as learners.
At RSD, we have created commitments for staff that ensures students have skills and dispositions that can lead to a successful career and life after graduation. This work begins in elementary school to ensure good habits form before reaching the secondary grades. At Oakland, we are committed to the following for our students:
*Responsible Citizen--Looking our for others, being responsible for one’s actions, taking care of our environment
*Empathetic Leader--Inspiring others, being a good listener, embracing the ideas from others
*Innovative Achiever--Demonstrating perseverance, thinking outside of the box, problem-solving
*Inclusive Collaborator--Including and listening to all points of view, ensuring all voices are heard, getting along with all members in a team
*Critical Thinking--Ensure high levels of learning for all, problem-solving at an independent level
Each month, students are recognized for demonstrating a growing knowledge about these important life skills. We are so proud of our students and their work toward these important goals.
You are an important part of this process. Children need to connect these skills to life outside of the school through your guidance. You can notice or encourage your children to intentionally use these skills at home with chores, playing with siblings, sports, shopping or even church.
It is a joy to serve you and have your children at Oakland. I hope you have a wonderful November!!

Parent and Community Suggestions
We strive to make Oakland Heights the best school it can be. If you have suggestions to help in this effort, please submit those suggestions at the link below.
Attendance Matters
This year, Oakland Heights will be giving awards for Stellar Attendance each quarter. Click below for the guidelines for the OHE Stellar Attendance Rewards.
Quarterly attendance comparison: 1st quarter attendance rate for 2022 was 93.5%. 1st quarter attendance rate for 2023 was 94.9%. 2nd quarter attendance rate for 2022 was 91.9%. I challenge our students and parents to increase our 2nd quarter attendance for this year.
Important Reminders
If your student receives a food backpack, please return the empty backpack to school on Mondays.
Morning drop off time is 7:30 am. There is no adult supervision before 7:30 am.
Please put your student’s first and last name inside their jackets/hoodies/coats so that they may be returned to them if misplaced.
