Pear Deck: Did You Know Edition
If you enable google classroom in your account settings, there are several neat functions that come along with it. (How-to guide)
- You can invite google classrooms after starting a session (dashboard view: blue roster button) or from the join code screen (projector view)
- Students will see the class when they load joinpd.com (they don't have to enter the code)
- The neat thing about having the classroom rostered is that you can see who has not joined the session yet. No math involved. No detective work needed.
- You can send the "take aways" directly to classroom.
Embed websites!
- Tried to and got an error? Here is how you can embed sites like Google Maps directly into your slide deck. More info on integrating outside websites to your session
You can't edit the slidedeck after a session starts, but you can add a prompt:
- In the teacher dashboard, click New Prompt (next to where you end the session)
Takeaways are nice, but Reflect and Review is awesome!
- Takaways are google doc version of the slidedeck with the student answers. The link takes students to their personal takeaway doc.
- The doc does allow you and the student to communicate as with a normal google doc.
- Reflect and Review allows you to continuous give feedback in the Pear Deck environment so students can change responses based on your feedback in the session.
Access/Inclusion Tip: Add audio to your slides
Make sure you have the PowerUp extension to keep your animations animated in the live sessions. (Student do not need this)

Education Spotlight: Maple Grove- the Multimedia Gurus

Maple Grove has dived into Book Creator & Video Editing!
- Student Voice: Fifth grade students built a "Where I Am From" artifact for their Culture Unit via Book Creator, video, or both! Students shared their stories in a variety of ways. When presenting the eBook, students gave their audience the option to read on their own, read with the author or to use the embedded immersive reader. Afterward, the audience offered feedback and praise. Other groups conducted gallery walks in stages allowing all to be both the participant and the presenter in a one-on-on or small group environment.
- Students now use video editing to help create anything from the daily Pledge of Allegiance and Mighty Hawk Affirmation to the all school read. When their teachers made an ebook about vowels, the students thought it did not met their standards, and so co-created "The Vowel Team's Rescue at Maple Grove" with their adult multimedia newbies. Will they rescue Mr. McCormick and "Y"? Read to find out!
- Academics isn't the only way students use their multimedia prowess: Attitude of Gratitude (see more here). Students extended their sense of community to the larger GSD community and those who support their learning outside of the classroom. Check out this Thank You book sent to the whole Buildings and Grounds department.
- Feeling the pressure from the excellence of their students, staff have also risen to the occasion, creating their own instructional content for character development such as the Hawks in 6!
