STAFF SPOTLIGHT--MRS. RICHCREEK
I am originally from Chicago but moved to Michigan when I was 4 years of age where my family landed in Coloma. Yes, I am a former Comet! While attending CHS a million years ago, I was very active in all things high school. I was a member of marching and concert bands in which I played baritone. I loved sports so I was a member of the volleyball, basketball, and softball teams. I also participated in several variety shows. In my senior year, I was voted to be “Mayor for the Day” where I attended a government day at Coloma Township Hall. I was also voted as class clown.
My immediate family consists of my husband and three daughters. My husband is bi-vocational; he owns and operates Richcreek Water Pumps Sales and Service and is also the pastor of our church, Revive Church, in Coloma.
As far as my position at WHS, I am the building secretary and administrative assistant to our principal, Ms. Powers. During my tenure, I coached 6th grade basketball, advised Student Councils as well as performed class advisor duties.
In my free time, I enjoy traveling, reading, motorcycle riding with my husband, going to the movies, and spending time with family and friends.
The best part about being a Panther is the awesome students and amazing staff here at WHS!
Something you may not know about me is I have over 20 tattoos!

ART NEWS
The WHS art department has seen the start of another great school year. Once again the students are proving what amazing artistic talent we have in our school.
Art I students started the school year with a focus on drawing and observational skills. They have worked hard to master the concept of drawing what they see, instead of what they think. We have spent many class periods learning different drawing techniques, practicing drawing basic shapes and finally learning to use value to create the illusion of depth. Now students have started their final drawing project for this unit. Students began by selecting a subject and finding reference photos to work from. Their choices of subjects have ranged from horses, to trucks, to lots of family pets. This will be our longest project to date running close to three weeks in length.
The first big project of the year for Art II was inspired by married artists and collaborators, Christo and Jeanne Claude. The pair is best know for decades of large-scale installation projects, where they wrapped buildings, bridges and even islands.
In class, students selected objects that had interesting forms, to wrap with cloth or paper and tie with string. Onced wrapped, students lit and photographed their objects focussing on interesting lines and contrasting values. The photos were used as a reference as the students worked to capture all of the lines, folds and creases. The final drawings were completed with graphite or charcoal.
Sculpture students are working with ceramics as they establish their hand building techniques. We have moved from simple carving techniques to coil building and will end the unit with slab building. Currently the class is busy putting the final touches on their Monster Mugs which should be out from the kiln just in time for hot cider on Halloween.
CHECK OUT WHAT'S HAPPENING IN WOODWORKING!
All of the students have been working hard and starting to learn the tricks of the trade, with everyone excited to learn more! The basic woodshop is working on individual gumball machines and the advanced class continues to work on their individual projects.
CONGRATULATIONS LAUREN LAWS!
Senior, Lauren Laws was nominated by one or more faculty/staff members at Lake Michigan College for the All-USA Academic Team Competition. USA Today and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society sponsor the academic team competition. This program seeks to recognize outstanding students enrolled in community and technical colleges. All students recognized by the All-USA Academic Teams will receive a stipend ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. All nominees are recognized at a luncheon in Lansing, MI in the spring.
Each community college has the opportunity to nominate four students for this scholarship per campus. Lauren was nominated for review by a selection committee comprised of faculty and staff. The selection committee will select final nominees to represent the LMC team.
Lauren is enrolled will complete her Associate Degree at LMC before her graduation from Watervliet High School. After graduation she will be completing her Business Degree at the University of Tennessee.

HOMECOMING 2023 SENIOR FLOAT AND HALLWAY
FRESHMEN FIELD TRIP
We are excited for your student to attend the 9th Grade Career Pathway Day on Friday, October
20. This event is hosted at The Mendel Center on the Lake Michigan College main campus.
During this activity, your student will encounter community professionals and senior students
that are currently engaged in the different career pathways. No matter where your student is in
their exploration of careers, it is our desire that this day will provide them with an excellent
opportunity to begin or deepen their knowledge of what is available to them.
This is an opportunity for students and employers to interact in a new and creative way.
Although they are not at a business or in a workplace setting, students should remember to
display professional and courteous behavior and represent their school accordingly. Students
should plan to dress in business casual attire (ie - no holes in jeans, no sagging pants, no midriff
showing, no t-shirts with objectionable logos/graphics).
Ideally your student has spent time preparing for this day and is armed with helpful questions to
ask the pathway experts that they encounter. Please be sure to follow up with them regarding
their experience and encourage them as they research some of the CTE (Career and Technical
Education) programming that is available to them in Berrien County.

A MESSAGE FOR SENIORS AND PARENTS
Hi everyone! I hope your Senior year has been amazing so far. Our yearbook staff has tried to be there to capture as many photos as we can, so we can preserve your year for you to look back on forever. Books will go on sale later this fall.
That being said, we can't be in all places at all times, and I know you are also taking some incredible pictures with your friends at each of your senior events. Please email me any great pictures you take with your friends at sbrant@watervlietps.org as you continue making memories for this final high school year together.
Our staff already has great ideas for how to include everyone in our book in numerous photos, but we'd love your help.
You and your parents can also upload your photos directly to our Herff Jones Yearbook Website if you'd prefer or install our eshare photo app to keep us up to date with all the happenings throughout the year. The link is below.
Our school code is 49098. It asks for names and descriptions of each pic, but you don't have to get too detailed with that. We know who you are :)
Thank you and I hope you had a blast during Homecoming Week!! I'd love any dance photos or fun pics you took throughout the week. :)

ERRANT ROBO-CALLS
Watervliet Public Schools apologizes for the errant robo-calls late Tuesday evening of this week. This was not a result of WPS error, but rather a technical glitch from our vendor.
We alerted the vendor of the issue when they opened this morning. They made the fix, stress-tested their systems, and have assured us that this error will not happen again. Additionally, you will see a Watervliet Schools' phone number on future automated calls, not an Arkansas or Virginia number.
Again, we are sorry for the inconvenience and our provider has assured us it will not happen again.
FREE LEARNING HALLOWEEN OPPORTUNITY
WESCO PEPSI CHALLENGE
Wesco is honored to be a part of every community in which each of our 55 locations resides. We are also fortunate enough to have the ability to give back to these communities. Through our relationship with Pepsi, $20,000 of fountain profits will be given to local public high schools like yours.
Every Wesco location will donate one cent from each fountain drink sold to local public high schools during October, November, and December. Pepsi has committed to donating up to $20,000 of fountain cup proceeds. Each Public High School will receive a minimum of $100. The rest of the $20,000 pledge will be distributed according to sales.
As one of the high schools selected, you will be notified of the amount collected from your local Wesco in early January. We are excited to work with Pepsi on this generous giving program for our local public education.
