Principal's Notes
Pond Cove Elementary School - November 26, 2023
Principal's Message
Winter Break is just around the corner, with only 17.5 school days left until it starts. Pond Cove is going to be pretty busy during this time. If you missed the school picture day or didn't like how your pictures turned out, don't worry, because picture retake day is on Wednesday, November 29th.
PCPA will be hosting the Scholastic Book Fair this week at Pond Cove. Students will join their class to visit the book fair. Families are invited to visit the book fair together on Wednesday, November 29th from 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm. Don't forget to load up an eWallet for easy purchasing at the fair. The PCPA will take cash and credit as well.
The parent-teacher conferences, which were rescheduled from October, are going to be held on Thursday and Friday, December 7th and 8th. The conferences on the 7th will start at 1:00 pm and end at 3:30 pm. Students will have a half day on this day. On December 8th, conferences will be held from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. This day will be a full day for conferences and students will not have school. If you haven't scheduled a conference with your child's teacher yet, it's not too late.
Just a heads up that the last day of school before the Winter Break is on Thursday, December 21st. Following that, there will be no school for students from Friday, December 22nd to Monday, January 1st. School will resume on Tuesday, January 2, 2024.
We hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving break and is now ready to get back to work. We're excited to see all of our students back on Monday!
Best,
Tiffany

More Fact Strategies for Second Grade
Mrs. Dow's second graders are starting a new unit in their math curriculum. In Unit 3 of Everyday Mathematics, second grade students explore additional strategies for solving basic facts, focusing on strategies for solving subtraction facts. Students solve subtraction number stories and practice facts using games and routines.
In Everyday Mathematics students learn several strategies for solving subtraction facts. By becoming familiar with a variety of strategies, children have the opportunity to choose a strategy that works best to solve a particular fact. The goal is not for every child to master every strategy; the goal is for children to find the strategies they best understand and can most successfully apply. By encouraging discovery and practice, working with multiple strategies helps children develop fluency with subtraction facts, which will be important for computation with multidigit numbers later in the year.
A Game of SPLAT in Kindergarten
Ms. Van Orman's class had a special visitor for math! Ms. Bailey, our district math strategist, joined the class to show them some math games. First, they matched numbers and ten frames as a group. Then, they played a game called Splat!
Splat is a math game that encourages students to analyze number relationships to connect and communicate mathematical ideas.Ms. Bailey would show students some dots and then did a splat by covering some dots up! Students took turns sharing how many dots were covered by the splat and how they knew.

If a student would like the retake photo to replace the original photo, please have the student return the original picture package to the photographer on picture day. We will replace the original package at no additional cost.
If this is the first time being photographed, just have the student/staff go to the camera and we’ll create a proof for them that will be sent to the school (and/or to their family email if we have that information). These proofs will be delivered approx. 4 weeks after picture day. An order code will be on the proof along with ordering instructions.
