Brentwood Elementary Mission Statement
~Achievement~Actions~Attitudes~
A Letter from the Principal...
Dear Brentwood Families,
Happy Fall! This year you have likely heard us talking about having a “growth mindset,” and your child may have even begun using some of this language in describing what he/she has done in our classrooms. As we have an opportunity at conference time to discuss each child’s strength areas and areas that are opportunities to grow, it seems like the perfect time for sharing some information on what having a growth mindset is all about.
While intelligence was long thought to be a fixed trait, more recent research shows that our brains continue to grow and develop with the effort we expend, ultimately even allowing for greater intelligence. This is great news for all of us, and certainly for students! So, how do we help our kids take advantage of this? In the next few newsletters you will find resources that will both help you understand the philosophy behind teaching students to have a growth mindset and how we can better help them embrace this important idea.
I will be sharing items, with permission from www.biglifejournal.com, in the newsletter. However there are many more resources you could find if you’re looking for more information. Another source with good information for parents is https://www.mindsetworks.com/parents/growth-mindset-parenting. It’s my hope that you’ll partner with us in helping teach your child to learn to see mistakes as opportunities to learn and successes as a result of effort. We want our students to understand that they can “grow their brains” by doing hard things.
Please consider adding some of this language to your daily conversations with your child, praising effort and meeting goals set. Modeling and sharing your expectations is of paramount importance, as you have the most influence on your child.
Thanks for taking the time to check out what we’re up to at Brentwood and for helping all of our students GROW THEIR BRAINS!

SCRIP gives money directly to the teachers and students of Brentwood. So far, Brentwood has earned $100 because of the families who have purchased gift cards either to use at gas stations and grocery stores that they would venture to each week, or to use as gifts. Please consider purchasing Scrip. Below you will find the steps to purchase and the date due each month.
There are 5 ways to purchase the cards. Please choose the option that works best for your family.
1. Use the form provided. Mark the cards you would like to purchase, send the form and a check made payable to Brentwood PTO to school with your student. We will process the information, pay for the shipping and get the cards back to you through your student within two weeks. Please include teacher and email.
2. Go online to www.shopwithscrip.com Create an account and use the enrollment code FAF8ED2321874. You may purchase cards through Prestopay (I recommend watching the video- enrollment for the first time will take a few steps but after that it is easy). We will still process your order, pay shipping and get the cards to you through your student.
3. Go online, enroll using the code in option 2, make your order and send a check in an envelope, made payable to Brentwood PTO. We will process your order, pay for shipping, and return your cards through your student. Please include teacher and email.
4. Create a PrestoPay account at www.shopwithscrip.com. Then, go to www.myscripwallet.com to place your order and receive the cards you purchase right to your phone.
5. If you have purchased before you may reload a card. (Please keep in mind, the lag time is 12 hours from purchase until available.)
Important Dates:
- Scrip Due by noon on Friday, Nov. 3, will be returned by Thursday, Nov.9. (Purchase a card for buying all the goodies needed for Thanksgiving).
- Scrip Due by noon on Friday Dec. 1., will be returned by Thursday Dec. 7. (Purchase a card for holiday shopping.)
If you would like a paper copy or if you have questions or concerns please feel free to contact the PTO or me personally at mickistevens24@yahoo.com. Thank you!

4th Grade Visits Eagle Creek Part for Annual Nature Field Trip
Every year, 4th grade students at Brentwoood visit the Eagle Creek Park’s Earth Discovery Center and Ornithology Center which offers extraordinary environmental education programming to nearly 10,000 children each year. This program introduces groups of all ages to the amazing diversity of plants and animals native to Indiana and foster a sense of wonder, enthusiasm, and stewardship for the natural world.
“The most important lesson is to teach children that they are a part of nature. Everything that they do in their everyday lives can affect the natural world.”
–Leah Frenzel, Earth Discovery Center Naturalist

Has Your Address Changed?
Have you moved recently? If your child rides the bus, we want to make sure your child is picked up on schedule and dropped off safely to your home. If you have changed addresses since you did the online registration in PowerSchool, we will need to have you fill out a transportation form so we can pass the information to the transportation department so your child's bus route can be updated.
You can find this form on our website. From the main page, click MENU, and then DOCUMENTS. Please return this form to the main office as soon as you can, so the appropriate changes can be made. Call us if you have any questions!
Update Information in Parent Portal
Parents are now able to do Year Round Updates in PowerSchool with the new Online Registration, now that “Returning Registration” has closed.
The type of updates the parents can do are:
- Emergency Contact changes
- Phone changes
- Email addresses
The types of updates Parents cannot do:
- Student address changes
- Parent names changes
(Contact the office for these types of changes)
Note: Parent changes must be done from a web browser, and not the PowerSchool app,
Simply sign into your parent power school account, and click on the “Year Round Update” link (see below) to update data in real time.

Cafeteria Information:
Please send lunch money in a marked envelope with your child to school when needed. This can be in the form of cash or check made out to "Brentwood Cafeteria". Become a Brentwood Volunteer
1. Every volunteer, field trip chaperone, or classroom party volunteer must have a background check completed through PCSC. Many of your completed these forms when you enrolled your children online this year as the forms were included. If you still need to fill one out for this year please contact the office well in advance of your first visit to do this.
2. Every volunteer must also complete a PCSC Confidentiality Volunteer Agreement in the office upon their first time volunteering each year.
3. Every visitor to our building during school hours must check-in at the reception desk and be entered into our Safe Visitor system. The very fist time you visit you must have your Driver's License or State Issued ID Card which will be scanned into the computer. Most likely you will NOT need it again upon subsequent visits because the system stores your information. (However, should a glich appear in the system and it is required of you it would be more convenient on you if you had your ID with you.) Every visitor is photographed at the same time they are checked in upon their first visit also.
Thank you for your flexibility as we continue to learn this software during our second year of its use. We know your first priority, as ours in the office, is the safety of all of our children.
(Lunch Room visitors will sit at a specially designated table with only their child and therefore will only be checked into our Safe Visitor system (#3) above.) They are not required to complete steps 1-2 above unless they want to volunteer in a classroom or small group setting, chaperone a field trip, or help out at PTO run classroom parties or events.)
